Have been putting on some serious miles lately, driving about 50 miles a day 5 days a week...Anyway lately there has been a vibration that starts at about 38 mph and stops by the time i reach 45mph...It does have the 2 piece drive line. and its not a vibration from the tires...Any ideas or similar probs fellas?
Welcome to FTE Robert! Can you provide any more info about your truck? Engine, trans, drivetrain etc? Does the entire truck vibrate or is it isolated to the steering wheel? The only generic things that I can think of are: thrown wheel weights, blistered tire, driveshaft out of balance or a damaged harmonic balancer.
It has a 240 straight 6 with 3 on the tree I believe is a top loader. 2 piece driveline and not sure on the rearend.. The vibration isnt in the tire/wheels...If i push in the clutch while driving the vibration goes away...
Has not been dong it for long and its not that bad but it is getting worse and wiyh the miles i'm racking up I figure I better hurry up and solve the problem.. But where to look...I was thinking maybe driveline or motor mounts....What is the harmonic balancer? not familiar with that...
When you feel the vibration, keep your right foot still on the throttle and lightly touch the brakes. If the vibration goes away or changes significantly, your problem is likely driveshaft.
What do you know about the history and maintenance of the driveshaft?
Do you get a squeaking sound from the drive line under 10mph that increases with the vehicle's speed? Any metalic sounding clunk when the clutch is released from a dead stop? If so, it may be the u-joints.
Another area to check if it's a 2 piece drive shaft, the carrier bearing or possibly slip yolk splines may be excessively worn (though that's kinda unusual). Regarding the bearing, the rubber deteriorates & doesn't insulate shocks or the bearings rust & wear out.
Here's a pic of the carrier bearing on a bumpside f-series:
... it's located close to the end of the cab as seen in this picture below:
A good drive shaft/axle repair shop could diagnose & repair it. Most heavy duty axle/driveline shops in this area work on medium to large rigs, but also do light duty as well.
I know no real history but I do know this truck was well taken care of...Will try the lightly on the gas and brake...Also it might not be so much at a speed but at 17oo rpms...hard to define...
I do get a squeek that sounds like its coming from the front of the truck sometimes...but it goes awat as soon as the truck is moving.. I thought bearing but am not familiar with these...It seems it might be the front U joint...
The squeak from the front is probably either the axle pivot bushings or radius arm bushings. A squeaky U-Joint coincides with the wheels moving forward or backward, noticeable while moving truck in gear from a dead stop. * Usually only noticeable from dead stop to fast walk speed.
Back to the vibration, to check for U-joints, jack up the rear axle (make sure to block front & back of front wheels). Grasp the driveshaft near the rear axle yolk & try to spin it. Do this at every u_joint intersection, carrier bearing & finally the transmission tail shaft. If you see play in the ujoint, that's the problem.
Most I've seen, it's usually the rear u-joint. IMHO, I'd replace them all & the carrier bearing while your at it.
If after worn parts replaced, the vibration still exists, i'd have a drive shaft rebuild service check for straightness & balance. Sometimes the tack welds on the steel weight comes off the drive shaft & throws it out of balance.
Shoot them full of grease & see if the squeak goes away. If so, that's another indication they need replaced. If they run dry, it kills the races & needle bearings inside the U-Joint cup.
Will do that. Also I trid the breaking whil driving and there was no change. Thinkin maybe outta balance? and what is the harmonic balancer? And could that cause it ? Thanks fellas.
i'm going to bet on the carrier bearing...i had almost the exact issue years ago- mine was just at a lower speed. its an easy fix, and they're cheap, if i remember correctly.
yeah I'm gonna try thay first...think it was $35.00
U joints all seem fine... it could be outa balance too... i'll let everyone know what I find out asap.....Thanks again..
If you push in the clutch and it goes away i would start looking at the motor.
check to see if it vibrates at the same rpm in every gear. look for a harmonic balancer that has came apart or twisted in itself
