Hi I have a 1968 f250 long bed that has a 360 backed up with a 4 speed manual tranny i want to put a 5 speed manual in it out of a 1988 ford truck was wondering if it would bolt up to the current bell housing. If you can help me i would greatly appreciate it Thanks Travis
No, it won't bolt up to your bell because it has an integral bell in the pattern of either the sbf or 385 or diesel motor, whatever was in the '88.
No, I can't help because I can't find an adaptor for it, and I don't think anyone makes an adaptor, even though one trans site says they are available--of course, they give no other info.
If you want a 5er behind an FE in a vehicle like that you are probably looking at a NV4500. Not cheap, but then the '88 trans wasn't going to be free either.
Now let me guess: You want to improve your gas mileage, right? Do the math. You are unlikely to get a 20% improvment in mpgs, but use that number anyway. Figure it out and see how many YEARS it will take to pay this back.
So is the '88 such a pos that you'd pull the trans and roll the rest off a cliff? Or is it a servicable truck?
The quick answer IF the '88 is in bad shape but the '68 is a fine jewel would be a complete engine and trans swap. You might have to throw a rebuild into the '88, or convert it to carb if you don't want to fiddle with the entire "wire transfer" etc.
That's a good site and link. The only adaptor I saw was FE to AOD. That might work with the Mazda 5er you have, but you should double check with them, as the input shaft length might be an issue.
IF you go with an AOD instead of a the 5er, be sure to get a trans from behind a V8, preferably from a truck, and from model years '88 to '93.
If it works to bolt up the MT, please post as this question comes up all the time.
