Do I just bought 1970 460 that I plan to put in the 1968 F100. Just wanted to know your suggestions on what would be the best type of headers to install with it?
Additionally I want to replace the manual three speed with atleast a 4 speed manual and preferably a 5 speed. Any suggestions there?
Thanks
If your truck has a 360-390 standard shift, the flywheel will work on the 460 if it is an early version. As far as a 4 speed I had a wide ratio top loader from small block Mustang and could not break it. They have a 2.78 first gear and a wide ratio is 2.32, not good with 3.25-3.50. The close ratio styles only work with 3.70 -4.11 rear gears. I had a built 460 that I put in my 68 back in 74. A 5 speed will be nice as long as is a model that can take the torque of the 460. Change to a cable style throttle from a 73 and up. I had to use a clutch disc that matched the small input shaft on the top loader with a pressure plate that matched the fly wheel. Since the disc/pressure were not a match I had to put a 5/16" flat washer under each pressure mount hole so that the clutch would release. Convert to a hydraulic throw out bearing so that the headers will fit. Sanderson makes engine mount kits. Headers from a 74 F150 with a 460 will fit. Depending on your current engine you may need new front springs. The 360-390 radiator will work and you may need a different drive shaft. Hurst Competition shifter is the best. Get with it.
All that is left to do is to start throwing money and tools at it. I have a bell housing and the correct dust shield that locates the starter as well as a fly wheel that I will sell if you need them. The bell housing is powder coated the correct Ford blue. PM me if interested
