I have a 2006 F350 PS 6.0. It has 126,000 miles on it. This past winter I noticed that the starting/cranking time was lasting longer than it was previously. I thought it may just be the cold weather but it is in the 80's and it is still doing it. It is definitely worse at first start up. If it is warmed up it doesn't take quite as long but does seem to be longer than it should be. Once started it idles and accelerates smoothly.............. I'm hoping it is not an injector issue and the fuel filters only have 6,000 miles on them. They are the Motorcraft filters. Any help guys??!!??
Before your rig totally gives up and you have to get it towed, or you spend $ on maybe fixes, get it to the dealership and get the Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM) checked.
I had the STC fitting fail and the FICM fail both out of town and the towing, rental cars and lodging just added to the overall cost.
I have 125k miles on my 2005 and I have accepted the fact that I will spend $ on unexpected costs, but from now on strange occurances get my attention. And yes there will be something else, not matter Dodge Chevy or a Super Duty. I would buy another Super Duty in a heart beat. The 6.0 diesel engine just happened to be a little trouble some, but at this point it is getting better as we don't DPF to deal with and new truck payments. Also, I like the fact that everything else is in good working order. The usual batteries and brake pads. The loads that it has pulled!
^^what he said. Look through the tech folder. There is a thread that explains how to check/repair the FICM. Although there are other things that can cause this problem. I would start with load testing the battteries. Make sure you disconnect them so that you are only testing one at a time.
Could be a case of injector sticktion, bad Glow plugs, glow plug controller, glow plug harness, or HPO leak somewhere. Those are a few things off the top of my head. You will really need something that can read codes and watch pids to help with diag. Like I said you can start with load testing the batteries, and checking the FICM. If you want to get a good diag tool, look into an autoenginuity with the ford enhancements. By far the best bang for your buck, and if you plane to do your own wrenching on your truck it is the best tool to have in your toolbox. If you want to get one contact Clay at RiffRaffdiesel.com he is a sponsor on here.
Thanks for the link! I followed the directions for testing the FICM. From what I assume the FICM is fine. I was getting 48.7 VDC while the ignition was on. While cranking it never dropped below 47 VDC. I did notice that the initial turn of the key I hear what I think is the fuel pump. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side and it is a suttle cranking/pumping sound. I have always heard this while waiting for the glow plug light to go off. It is a constant cranking but toward the end of the cranking it sounds like it is sputtering a little bit..........is this normal? Any ideas of what I can check to alleviate other issues?

What your hearing is the vacuum pump running, the fuel pump is under the drivers seat bolted to the frame rail.
have you had the batteries load tested yet? If they are good, and you still don't have a way to check for codes, I would test the GP's and all componets in the GP system.
