I am a newbie here, and am in the process of sanding down my dad's old 65 f100. It was our old farm truck, (in fact the one i learned to drive stick when I was eight) and is in pretty good condition. (except for the dents in both front fenders from herding cattle, Oops). Anyway, I need to take off the emblems to sand, and it looks like they are held on by clips, do they just have to be pried off, or are they stuck on too? Is there a "best" way to take them off? I am especially worried about the "custom cab" emlem, it looks fragile.
Welcome aboard!; The door emblem "customcab" is very fragile if old; this emblem as well as the two on the front fenders are press on by pins; used a flat tip object and slowly pry across the emblems; be especially easy on the emblems on the doors; their held on with four prongs most located near portion of the cursive section between letters. The fenders emblems have three larger prongs; don't have to be as easy on these; compare to the customcab emblems on the doors. The hood emblem is bolted on with two 3/8 nuts.
hope this helps.
Thanks for the advice. I will try to remove them this weekend. It looks like there is a pad or gasket around the twin I beams emblems also? I'm sure these will need to be replaced? Thanks again for the advice
Brad
Barrel clips are used with the Custom Cab door nameplates and larger versions for the fender emblems. These expand when the pins on these parts are pressed in.
There are no gaskets used with any of these parts. A dab of "dum dum" was placed on each of the pins before they were hand pressed into the barrels clips...which were installed in the holes in the sheet metal...first.
Dum dum is a form of caulking, can be bought at automotive paint supply stores in sticks that resemble licorice, but do not taste or smell the same!
Use a plastic putty knife to carefully pry these emblems off, as it will not scratch the paint like a blade screw driver (that some peeps use) will.

Ok, so I got the emblems off, but now I need to get the chrome trim off. One piece came off easy, and looks like what holds it on is a plastic plate with a hook that slides into a groove on the chrome. How easy are those plates to remove if I need to replace them? And can they be bought individually or have to be in a pack? Do I just pry them off, or is there an easy way to get the chrome trim off? (I'm sure there is, I just don't know it!)
The clips that hold the trim on are actually bolted to the fenders and doors thru the sheet metal. Just remove the nuts. I soaked mine with PB Blaster a few times and they came right off.
Good luck.
the side trim is held on with clips...of which I have LOTS of spares...3/8 nuts...leave the cowl for last as those are a bear to get to the nuts from the floor vents with your arm and a 1/4 drive ratchet shoved up there...also...speaking of floor vents...open them both up and empty the crap out of them...prolly full of needles n leaves...a massive crap trap...theres a huge drain hole in the bottom that works fine when kept clear...most are full to the bottom of the vent door...the hole goes all the way to the floor level...so about 6" or so...
be gentle on the molding clips...as they break loose and jamb in the molding as designed...some may wanna spin depending on how stubborn they are...a good sight is looking under the bed rail and seeing 2 rows of clean gray colored nuts...means theres nil for rust and will prolly spin off easy as pie once removed. Throw nothing away...I learned that lesson the hard way years ago...I have lots of the fasteners and clips used on these trucks if you are in need as time goes on...as well as other parts too.
