11B23 PCM Flash: Has Ford placed a Hold?
#16
My 2010 has 16,XXX on it and I had the 11B23 flash done just a few days before leaving on a trip with the fifth wheel. The trip was just 250 miles one way and I couldn’t really tell any difference in fuel mileage. The only difference was, for the first time since I’ve had the truck, the Cleaning Exhaust Filter message came on and stayed on for 15 miles. I was getting concerned because the message would usually disappear after a few seconds and wouldn’t show again until the cleaning was completed. The message finally disappeared when I had so stop on the highway for road construction. I never did get the cleaning completed message. I’ll be watching this closely.

Just got my F350 back today from the dealer. Mine had been flashed in March but have not towed. After seeing all the problems here I went to the dealer. They had 2 customers with the engine going to safe mode under heavy towing. After doing some research they found a tech update for trucks flashed from Feb-mid May there could be a problem. So I had mine reflashed with the latest update.
Also contacted Continetal tire after the recall. Dealer replaced my spare but had purchased new tires. If you call Continental and have proof of purchase on new tire they will pay up to $250 per tire. Do not need DOT off the tire just VIN from the truck!!!!
Hope all goes well......of to pull my 5th wheel!

This thread may be dead by now; last post before mine was mid June '11. Just in case someone like me is looking for answers, I just had my 2008 F250 6.4L flashed last week. The truck displayed "Reduced Engine Power" after about 4 miles. This is also known as "limp mode". The dealer found the problem to be a hyper-extended thermostat and fixed for no charge. Someone about a few replies earlier said the flash was most likely not the problem and that it was merely exposing existing problems that the old code was missing. Based on my experience, I'd have to agree. I've down a fair amount of commuter driving and some light towing (16' trailer loaded with furniture, etc.) and all has been good. Anyway, I'd get the flash done and be prepared to get fixed what it discovers; this is probably the best long-term approach. Hope this helps someone.

FWIW these 08s came new with a "CLEANING" message that came on and stayed on till complete. In 09 there was a new flash that changed that to a very brief (like 5 seconds) "CLEANING" message and nothing further. So the 11b23 contained that same abbreviated "CLEANING" message. Funny thing is even though my truck was scanned in 2009 for the update, it sometimes reverts to the message staying on. I can't say for sure but I'm starting to think that it does that on the first cleaning following an interrupted cleaning.

"Some 2008-2010 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.4L engine and the powertrain control module (PCM) was reprogrammed between 2/23/2011 and 5/18/2011 may exhibit DTC P0234 overboost under heavy load, towing or while climbing a extended grade."
And they will only load the new cal if you receive this DTC and had the 11B23 uploaded between the dates above.
Now, mine was loaded with the 11B23 in April and I recently was hauling my SHO on a 17' all steel car hauler (prob only ~6K lbs) through the hills of Virginia and WV on I77 in the 90+F heat running full boost for extended periods of time on the heavy grades and the CEL or wrench never came on.
Although, the DPF cracked at some point on the trip and the dealer doesn't want to look at it since it didn't throw any codes , even though it still blows some black smoke with good fuel and cetane booster, multiple tanks after this started, but that's another story... /rant. I don't want to derail this thread.

I just looked this up and it appears it's not for every truck. Here's the text straight from the TSB:

I've been to 3 of the local dealers already and they seem to not have much diesel experience or are being lazy/swamped. I know some people in Ford that I plan on contacting though
IDK, it builds boost just fine all of the way to ~32psi, where it's always maxed out and there doesn't seem to be any performance/power loss. It's just a light puff of black smoke with a blip of throttle in park/neutral or off the line. It also isn't going through any oil or coolant (I've been checking it very often since this started).
I think I'm just gonna keep driving it until it either gets worse or throws a code. I'm at just under 78K, so still got plenty of powertrain warranty left.
(sorry for the hijack )

If you have a 2010 wouldn't you still be under the Bumper to Bumper if the DPF? And beings it is a required emissions device and less then 2 years old I would think there would be a law requiring some sort of warranty. I mean there is like a $25K fine for removing it so how could it not be under warranty?
