Just thought I'd close this off.
I replaced the head gasket, re-reassembled the motor again and the old explorer runs like a top again. A lot better than I would expect it to @ 280,000 that's for sure.
Next week will be the exhaust and the parking brakes, then it should pass inspection thankfully.
