108k miles on truck
5k miles on oil
Thank you for your update Mark. I know I appreciate it.

Looks like this UOA shows your viscosity is at the high end of 30. Which is about the highest I think I have seen after 5000 miles.

Might need to rethink my oil.

Viscosity Charts - Bob is the Oil Guy

Thank you for all the cash you have spent doing these UOA's. Reps just don't do enough for all that you have done here.

As many "old timers" here on the forum know, I use to post a lot about oils and oil change intervals and filters.... I just had to jump back in here...

Wow... those iron levels are high and a source for concern in my book???

According to Blackstone, the iron reading is caused by: cylinders, rotaing shafts, the valve train and any steel part sharing the oil. With such high and consistent iron readings, no matter what oil you are using... your truck is not wearing well (IMO)

When my truck was new, the highest reading that my iron levels were at (Blackstone report) was 16... and that was through 40,000 miles.

At 58,000 miles (yes, I changed oil every 5,000 miles I just don't sample every time).... my iron dropped to 9 and then would fluctuate between 8 and 10 through today... which is 210,000 miles.

I used Motorcraft 15w-40 through 58,000 miles and then have been strictly/exclusively Rotella-Syn 5w-40 all the way up to today.

I change my oil every 5,000 miles and only use Motorcraft oil filters (all purchased from Walmart).

The only change I have seen in Rotell-Syn was a change in formulation from CI4+ to CJ4 in which the Molybdenum and Boron were increased.

My iron averages (as maintained on an Excel spredsheet) is 10.5.

Thanks,

Wow... those iron levels are high and a source for concern in my book???

According to Blackstone, the iron reading is caused by: cylinders, rotaing shafts, the valve train and any steel part sharing the oil. With such high and consistent iron readings, no matter what oil you are using... your truck is not wearing well (IMO)

When my truck was new, the highest reading that my iron levels were at (Blackstone report) was 16... and that was through 40,000 miles.

In principle I agree Jeff, but in reality ......... what exactly would you suggest is warranted?? When you look at my 108k miles and the iron levels are actually dropping now, it doesn't make sense to me to begin exploratory surgery and end up with thousands of dollars of spending. Also, it just isn't that much iron (in total mass anyway).

Quite frankly that level of iron has a very low chance of keeping the truck from making 300k miles. As I think about it (and I have for quite awhile), I believe that the Mobil 1 TDT is helping or the fact that I quit adding biodiesel is making a difference. The interesting thing about the iron levels is that it does not go up the two times I have exceeded 5k OCI's (went to 6k) ..... AND, the 3 OCI's at 3k miles produced the same level as the rest (not lower as you would expect). Quite frankly it could be something as simple as internal oil pan rust due to my use of biodiesel.

BTW - I hope in your description of your standard maintenance practices you are not suggesting that I am keeping up with proper maintenance - that would dissappoint me some .... lol!

Your oil change practices are spot on... 3,000 miles to 6,000 miles is not the issue and never has been. I am also sure that your using OEM/Racor/Motorcraft oil filters... so issues there.

Based on your post above, not sure how the use of biodiesel would increase or decrease the iron level ratings in your oil as the fuel side of your truck is totally seperate from your oil/lube side of you truck... unless you had a bad injector and then your "fuel dilution" figures would be through the roof.

I agree with you that spending tons of money on tearing the motor down does not make good economic sense... but I am shocked to see such high, and consistent, iron level readings, no matter the brand of oil being used.

It just seems that something is not wearing well when, on average, no one else has numbers like this... consistently that is?

I agree Jeff - it is something that has stumped me .... pretty much the only thing about this truck that I am disappointed in.

As far as fuel and oil mixing - there is always SOME fuel dilution of the oil - even in perfectly running engines. Had a tribologist tell me that some harsh fuel additives will do exactly what I am seeing. He does not recommend some of them for that reason. I switched to DieselKleen (from a Bio and Stanadyne mix) as a trial. I have run 3 oil analyses since the switch and the numbers are coming down. From as high as the 80's to 52. That is a significant drop! I am patient and will keep watching and posting. I hope to see it drop back into the 20's before I will say my suspicions are confirmed.

I only run regular diesel (no biodiesel available around here in Kansas City) and I run PowerService year-round (white in winter and grey bottle the other 3 seasons. I run double dose at every fill-up (32oz of dieselkleen per 44 gallons of fuel)... 44 gallons is what my Excursion holds.

On long road trips (not winter due to anti-gel protection), I cut back to 1/2 that rate (which is their normal usage rate) since I am buring up the fuel at a quicker rate... otherwise I use it more for the fuel injector cleaners and fuel lubricity benefits... and of course the cetane boost.

Good luck with your findings as you move forward with your "research".

Just curious if anyone has tried Delo? I had an '89 7.3 that would not keep Rotella in the engine. It would find every seep and leak possible. I switched to Delo and it stopped almost overnight.

I know it had to be something in the additives, but never ran an oil sample for analysis. Diesels can be finicky when it comes to oil. Delo is an old school oil, but it is premium grade.

Just bought an '06 6.0 and it was using Rotella-T. I was wondering if the Powerstrokes still favored Delo.

Motors leak due to leaky seals... not the oil. With that said, lighter-weight oils such as synthetic 5W-40 (when cold and less viscosity when at the 5W rating) could leak past worn out seals.

Some brands may include "seal conditioners" which help seal older motors... usually these are marketed as high mileage oils.

For diesel motor oils, the 6.0L motor will use any name brand, high quality CJ4 rated motor oil... either 15W-40 or 5W-40.... just pick your brand just like you pick you style of t-shirt and underwear.... to each their own.

I personally have ran Rotella-Syn 5W-40 year round in my 2003 Excursion 6.0L since it had 50,000 miles on it (ran Motorcraft 15W-40 before then) and now with 210,000 miles, all is well and no leaks!!!

Mark,
Good to see your iron is trending downwards... If I were a betting man, I would bet the biodiesel was the source of your issue.

Beach,
Here's an article that explains the issue with Biodiesel.

reading The Diesel Place (A.D Spicer) diesel fuel additive analysis of 2007, Diesel Kleen scored low enough that it had a net loss on lubrication.

questions:

1. could that be leading to the observed high lead counts? I guess this is answered w/ the fuel dilution results which are low as is typ. w/ non-dpf 6.0 (little post injection unburned fuel ring blow-by). But if lots of the additive was getting into the oil, would a net-negative fuel additive lubrication property carry over to an engine's oil? At what concentration?

2. has anyone (else) using opti-lube done an oil analysis?

3. strange that ending bio diesel use decreased lead levels (its supposed to be a great fuel lubricant). (i just read the biodiesel mag article on dilution but thats mostly referring to post 2007 motors). Too bad they did not test 6.0 instead of TDI for dilution % leading to problems.
Bio feedstock and base dino diesel quality is a topic for a sep. (and very interesting) thread however as water/calcium/sulfer/phosphorus/magnesium/etc vary widely by feedstock.
what type of bio diesel were you using?

4. man, that Mobil syn is expensive.. not really a question, but $75/gal... yikes
