You are high on all of those elements.

It's worth considering that the piston rings (chromium, moly, and all those listed above) might be contributing to these numbers, especially if Mark has been running fuel additives. Many (most) fuel additives change the shape of the flame in the combustion chamber due to their chemical make-up. Usually the flame front doesn't actually encounter the cylinder walls leaving a coat of oil intact (why diesels have excellent cylinder life as compared to a gasser). Thoughts?

Gotcha. So Iron is the only one that is still high enough to concern you?

I honestly don't know much about these smaller engines to really know. I only offered the piston ring as another potential source of the in-question elements but if the numbers are higher than the should be it's worth looking into their source, especially if something as easy as just skipping the addition of a fuel additive clears them up (much easier than a HPOP tear down). I think you would be a better source of knowing what levels are concerning. I know theory and large industrial diesels (the types in ships and gen-sets) these small diesels have their own wacky personalities.

I really think that the "need" of a syn oil is greatly overblown and could be contributing to your elevated numbers, along with the other variables you have mentioned, namely fuel additives.

While your elevated iron numbers are not at the warning stage, they are much higher than most 6.0's I have seen, and much higher than the Blackstone averages.

For a comparision every gallon of fuel I burn has been additized, and have never seen an iron number above 11@ 7,500 OCI. While I am not ruling it out in your case that between the fuel /fuel additive and oil choices could be contributing to your elevated numbers. The elevated copper has been covered here and everywhere else concerning the Schaffers 5w-40 as "shedding", and everyone claims that after a few OC's the numbers will settle back down.

That is why I suggested the 10w-40 Rotella, as it is a dino and may work very well in your truck. While I am no tribologist, I do know that some fuel additives and some syn oil just do not work very well together. You would have to research what fuel you are using the most and what they are adding to it before you purchase it before ruling out fuel additives.
I agree w/ you 100% - except I do not have (and have not had) high copper (except w/ the 1st oil change at 3000 miles on the engine - which is just breakin wear).

Two reasons I am still on the 5W40 synthetic bandwagon is that the Ford recomendation in hot climates and when towing is a 40wt oil AND I intend to do all I can to avoid injector stiction. I have never had an issue w/ stiction and part of my reasoning is that the 5W40 synthetic is a big help in this area.

I agree that some synthetics do not perform well w/ some fuel additives. I suspect it is the biodiesel in my case - not working well w/ the PBE. Since the iron came down nicely (and most likely will continue to do so) w/ the current oil and an occasional Diesel Kleen additive, I am happy w/ the 5W40. My theory is that specifically the Valvoline PBE did not do well w/ the additives . The Schaeffer clearly did fine with it. The elevated lead numbers that accompanies the Schaeffer 9000 5W40 has been experienced by numerous other people - and I just felt I could do better w/ another oil. The Rotella seems to be that oil, but several more OCI's will help determine that.

Eventually I will run a 7500 mile OCI (or two) just to get the viscosity data on it. I sincerely doubt that it will have sheared to anything lower than a high number for 30 wt oil. I have no plans to run more than 5000 OCI's as a general rule though. The proof of all of this will most likely be at 300k miles, not at 88k.

My mistake, I meant lead, not copper.

So have you, or for that matter anyone , tried the 10w-40 in the 6.0?

I have not, and I don't see the point really. Few if any of us are using the T6 synthetic for extended life or improved wear protection. We are using it for improved cold starts and to help prevent stiction. The lower the xW number, the better the cold starts with the same 40 weight protection when hot.

The T5 is a synthetic blend, and the price is more than half the price difference between conventional and full synthetic. And I don't really care about the price anyway. If I did, I would be running 15W half the year and 5W half the year.

It was only for my own curosity, I am a 10w-30 dino convert for the last 40,000mi. I do not use Rotella, and I think the 10w-40 I seen was a dino.

Oil Report M1 TDT

Bismic here is my [IMG][/IMG], if this helps. I have been running M1 TDT 5w-40 since 25K, I have 72K on the truck now changing it inbetween 5-6K. I have been using Stanadyne Performance formula for just about every tank on this oil analysis.

Great UOA - I am not surprised either!

Thanks for the post semperstrokin.

Well a year has passed, and since Sean recently reminded me of this thread, I thought I would update it.

Where I left off ..............

I ran one more OCI with Rotella T6. The iron went up some - to 77 ppm.

I then changed to Mobil 1 TDT 5W40 and have since run 3 UOA on this oil. All OCI's were right around 5k miles.

The iron results with this oil have been: 69 ppm, then 65 ppm, then 52 ppm. I just changed the oil in April, so the 52 ppm is a recent result.

I haven't had an iron number this low since 53k miles (that was on my 3rd OCI w/ Valvoline PBE). I am now at 108k miles.

I believe that my conclusion is that I like the Mobil 1 TDT 5W40.

So, here is a summary of only iron:

First five oil changes - all using Motorcraft 15W40. The oil change interval on all but one were very close to 3k miles (OCI #3 was 4.5k).
Iron Results: 42, 37, 31, 21, and 31 ppm

I then ran five oil changes with Schaeffer 9000 5W40. The oil change interval on all were very close to 5k miles.
Iron Results: 32, 29, 28, 26, and 29 ppm The lead was low at 2ppm, but by the 3rd UOA on the Schaeffer, it was up to 7 and 8 and stayed there.

The next four oil changes were with Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme (PBE). The oil change interval on all were very close to 5k miles except the first and the last and they were at 3.7k and 3.35k miles. the lead began to immediately drop w/ the PBE and was as low as 1 ppm when I switched oils.
Iron Results: 29, 30, 56, 78 ppm

The next four oil changes were with Schaeffer 9000 again. The oil change interval on all were very close to 5k miles except the first and the third and they were at 3.7k and 6k miles respectively. The lead immediately came back and was as high as 22 ppm on the third change (did not analyze the second change) but had dropped to 9 ppm on the fourth one.
Iron Results: 62, no sample, 76, 80 ppm

The next five oil changes were with Rotella T6. The oil change interval on all were very close to 5k miles. The last two had ZDDP added. The lead immediately dropped and stayed between 2 and 4 ppm.
Iron Results: 82, 86, 85, 68, and 77 ppm

Just as an FYI, after two oil changes on the T6, I quit using BioDiesel as a fuel additive. By the third oil change on T6, I had switched from Stanadyne to DieselKleen

My last three oil changes were with Mobil 1 TDT. The oil change interval on all were very close to 5k miles. No ZDDP added. The lead has been between 2 and 6 with the two most recent number being 6 and 5 ppm.
Iron Results: 69, 65, and 52 ppm
