OK, I have 2 dumb questions regarding brake rotors. Mine are shot (all 4) and I need to do a complete brake job. My truck is basically used for towing my toy hauler, but is also used around town occasionally.
My questions: Should I go with stock rotors as opposed to slotted rotors? Are there benefits to one over the other? How about pads (other than ceramic as I understand they tear up the rotors).
Next, for my year truck (2000 F250 SD crew cab short box 4X4) it shows 2 rotors, 13.03" or 14.02". Is there anyway to figure out which one without taking the wheel off? I have alloys so I can't see the rotor behind the wheel to even guess at a measurement.
Thanks for putting up with the never ending string of dumb questions.
theres no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb answers. as for your O.E. replace ment vs. Slotted/drilled rotors, be sure if you go with O.E. to use and O.E. replacement pad (i usually dont go anything over semi-metallic) and if your going to go with Aftermarket slotted/drilled rotors, to use a pad with material that the manufacturer of the rotor recomends. as for your dimensions on the rotor, i do beleive the 14.02 were installed with the "class 3 tow package" that ford offered. DO NOT take my word for that, im not 100% that thats right.
I wasn't planning on going with drilled/slotted, but had read some posts prior about the "slotted only" being a good thing for towing, but not especially for daily driving.
I was thinking about going slotted w/ ceramics. Pad and rotor package. I haven't heard great stuff about drilled or drilled and slotted for our trucks. In my opinion that's for a Honda with five spokes with the caliper and rotor exposed. I know guys running slotted only and liking them.
I had the same question regarding size on the front rotors. As I understand it the deal is with 3.73, 4.10 or 4.30 gear ratio its the 13" diameter and with 4.88 or 5.38 gear ratio its the 14-1/2" diameter. Mine has 3.73 and the 13" were correct. Of course measuring your existing rotors is the only sure way of knowing. I went with Wagners lifetime warranty on defects and Hawks LTS pads.
