I sold my '99 and moved into a new 2010 last winter.
The new truck is leaps and bounds ahead of the '99. The transmission is simply outstanding and the motor has a lot more go. I'm very happy with the move.
And the V10 is in demand so shopping used for a late model truck can be difficult. I have two buyers for my 2010 already, if and when I sell it, someday.
Just got back from a trip to the Black Hills. The new truck got 10.8 mpg cruising between 65-70mph with the car trailer and FJ40. The '99 got about the same but at much lower speeds.
They will bolt on - the pistons are different, so not sure what the resulting compression ratio will be, or if the valves will hit the pistons.
The rest of the engine? Timing chain, timing cover, all that stuff is different.
The PI heads are "Performance Improved". They breath better at high RPMs. The non-PI heads were used on the V10 from 1997 through 1999, both E-series and F-series. PI heads (2-valve) were used from 2000 through 2004 for the F-series, and from 2000-2005 in the Excursion, and from 2000-up in the E-series.
The only platform with the 3-valve heads is the F-series from 2005-up
Really?!? The EX uses the old design?!?
Ford is dumber than I thought. Did they use the E4OD in 05 too?
Yes, the '05 Excursion (4wd) also continued with the front leaf springs AND the old-style instrument cluster.
The '05 Excursion front grille/headlights DID get upgraded for '05 but that was it.
The '05 Excursion with 6L PSD ALSO continued to use left over '04 engines,
ONLY the last 2-3 months of production got an '05 engine - with a special PCM to work
with the old-style dash..
The '05 Excursion is an interesting assortment of parts - which makes it's almost essential to do things yourself,
because a generic maintenance shop would likely have no idea what to do..
unless the transmission is a dud...around 2002 heard about the new 6.0. waited for it and didnt want to buy first MY03. while waiting started to hear more and more problems with 6.0. so 2004 rolls around. the v10 is looking much better, then hear about new 3v, trans and body update. its 2005, cant wait any longer, maybe a few more months for job 2 trucks and bought an 05 3v v10. the torqshift was out already for a couple flawless years and thankfully the 3v wasnt a flop. i think there was a brief issue with torqshift planetary gear roll pins backing out. not sure if the ten speed already available in the 150s will be a similar gm joint venture or a completely different animal. hopefully just a beefed up 150 and all the problems worked out
