1977 build thread with pics

Back in April of 2009 my uncle gave me his 1977 f150 that he bought in his 20's from the original owner which makes me the third owner. He quit driving it for some reason he couldn't remember so it had been sitting in his pasture since 1996-1997. When I got it home I did a quick tune up: plugs, wires, cap, oil, and some other stuff. Once it ran I found out the cylinders 3 and 4 had no compression, shortly after it started knocking. So I pulled the valve covers to find 2 push rods bent like a S and there lifters in pieces in the lifter valley so it was time to pull the engine.
My dad and I were interested in swapping a 460 instead of a 400 again, so the hunt for a 460 began. I got a 460 and had it completely rebuilt, bored .030 over and a mild cam installed, along with a 650 CFM offroad carb and L&L headers.
While the engine was in the shop I had a lot of down time, I decided the frame needed to be cleaned so I took the bed off to start sand blasting and now it sits in the shop with no front clip, cab or bed just a rolling chassis. I started sand blasting in the fall of 2010 since I worked all summer but only got a quarter of the frame done before winter hit and since the shop isn’t heated that put an end to my work for the winter.
It sits now with the frame partially sand blasted and the 466 is almost done, I order the Carb last sunday since Edelbrock had there big carb deal going where you bought any carb and got a free air cleaner. The only thing left is the L&L headers and motor mounts.

I’ll try to update this as often as I can, but the weather here hasn’t been cooperating so not much has been done except finishing the engine.

Dang that truck should have never been sitting in the pasture. It's great that you've got it and going to fix it up. It's nice to see another truck saved and these types of build threads are awesome. Motor looks great and will be a nice addition to that truck. I really like that color scheme. I wouldn't change it a bit.

Ya, the weather up here sucks. I've had mine out only twice since last October (ya it's a pavement cruiser). Hopefully, it will turn for the better and you can get some work done.

Looking closer at that truck, the chrome looks in really awesome shape. Only thing wrong from the pics is the passenger side upper bed isn't race track, but other than that, it looks great. And the body looks damn level so the mounts should be in pretty good shape. Again, Nice truck and project. And for a South Dakota truck that's awesome.

Nice, can't wait to see it running. I want to swap a 4x4 frame under my 77, maybe this will be the motivation I need.

Thanks for all the positive post, I'm going to keep this as updated as I can. I'm thinking this weekend I'm going to test fit the carb and put the "custom" valve covers on that I did my self. since this weather isn't cooperating for painting I think I'm going to buy some bulk brake tubing and get it all bent so I can install it when ever and of course take some recent pics. My only concern with the sandblasting is the axles are still attached to the frame so I hope i don't damage anything with all the sand.

Bucks77ford yes all the chrome trim is in good condition, some pieces fell off but all the pieces were still there. When I took the bed off I could tell the truck use to be black and silver. According to my uncle he said the original owner had it repainted before he sold it so that where the black and red came from, which I like a lot.

Hey my truck is a short wheelbase and I had a parts truck that was a long wheelbase with that upper race track chrome on it. I have the 2 bed piece's and the 2 end piece's that turn down. One piece that turns down isn't the best shape but could be fixed. The 2 bed piece's just need cleaned up. If you could use them let me know. Scott

thats a generous offer but I think im going to keep it the way it is.

Do you guys think 199.99 for a complete polyurethane bushing kit plus all the hardware including the bed bolts is a good deal? Or 189.99 for all the other bushings, including left spring, radius arm, C bushings, trac bar, and drag link? all from LMC

Well a quick update, I got almost everything off the frame and started sandblasting again this weekend. I just have the passenger side frame rail left then I can paint. I also figured out why my uncle parked this truck, he said the 4x4 wasn't working and he thought it was the transfer case but I already had that rebuilt and nothing was wrong with it. Well this weekend I noticed the front axle's yoke spins freely, so I toke off the cover and found this

Pinion

Thats whats left of the teeth that use to be on the pinion gear, there not the best pics but you can tell the pinion has no teeth, the ring had some pretty good nicks in it too.

sneak peak for whats to come on the 466
and a random photo of all the Edelbrock stuff
I also painted the engine Ford blue but forgot to take a picture but i'll get one on here soon, the engine is mostly blue with gloss black pulleys and brackets I think it turned out well.

I did some sandblasting on the frame this week and took some pics but they didn't turn out so well with the blackberry so i'll take some this week with an actual camera

Yes please do not take pictures with a blackberry, take them with a real camera. Are you gonna run a spacer for your carb or no?

Right now I'm not going to run a spacer, I'm going to get it running then go from there. Actually some of the pictures on here are from my blackberry but when I got done sandblasting it was getting dark and I didn't have good lighting in the shop
