you mean "dies" as in engine shuts off? i don't think low fluid would cause that. i'd say more likely ignition wires shorting out in steering column when you shift.

Low trans fluid can make the the engine die, or shut off. It allows the torque converter clutch drift on. That's just like applying the clutch in a manual transmission.
