Starter Options

So guys, my brother has to revive the 1986 because he needs a Diesel for the things he is going to do when he gets home. Im gonna be using it when I get home cause it still runs.(He is gonna replace the blown head gaskets) So, we need the following for this thing:

Starter(I took the Motorcraft Starter for my 1984)
Starter Solenoid
GP's(motorcraft i know)
Injectors(My dad replaced IP already)
Something to band-aid the transmission....it slips ALOT
Positive Battery Cable
Batteries
Altenator Belt
Vacuum Belt
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Oil change
Transmission Flush

My older brother is an army Light Wheeled Vehicle mechanic, he knows these IDI engines from the HMMMV. They use the 6.2, 6.3, and 6.5 GM motors. He can do the work, he just needs to know whats best and whats not so great. He is used to the army's not so great stuff lol.

So give me the rundown for YOU guys would recommend for all those parts besides the obvious ones. He only needs it for the summer because I dont want him to break mine. Ohenyai the parts that you need are still yours he just wants to use it for the summer. Anyway, later guys.

For the starter i like my old direct drive. Some guys switch to gear reduction but the direct drive worked for the first 24 years. Injectors go with pensicola because the price can't be beat, i notiiced they also have vacuum pumps too. I got my battery cable from the bumper to bumper (its now oreillys) standard motor products make it but i no longer have the number for it. Belts, gates green stripe have been working great for me. Don't go with a cheap belt on the alt. Trans try some lube guard it sometimes helps. If you have another converter you could try that

You said just for the summer? Direct drive would be ok. I went with the higher torque gear reduction nippondenso style from db electrical. Only $97 and could darn near make the motor jump out from under the hood. That extra cranking speed comes in handy on really cold days when there's no cord around to plug in.

Napa Direct drive sounds like the best deal for a long term starter. This thing is going to become a parts truck in september when i get home from Iraq. Random ppl on here been wanting a complete truck for parts. I can help them so I am doing what I can haha. This thing is just going to have it run until its time to retire. 575k is way more then enough for me, my dad and the truck itself.

Band adjust.....C6

Raise or shinney under the blocked vehicle.
Clean all the dirt from the band adjusting screw
Hold the adjusting screw from turning, remove and discard the lock nut.

Install a new locknut, tighten the adjusting screw to 10 ftlbs torque.
Back off the adjusting screw exactly 1 1/2 turns.
Hold the adjusting screw from turning and tighten the locknut to 35-40 ftlbs.
Lower or shinney out from under truck, remove blocks.

My father said he added too much transmission fluid one time. Is redoing the band adjusting screw going to fix this?

If that C-6 has 575,000 on it I doubt anything but a rebuild is going to help the slipping. Worn front pump, old seals, clutches probably worn so thin you can see through em.

Won't hurt to try the band adjust but don't get your hopes up.
