Pulling with ATV in bed

I have a 2002 screw with the 5.4 and want to pull my 5000lb camp trailer with the ATV in the bed of the truck. If I bought the receiver extension and added 8 inches between me and the truck I could do it with the tailgate down. Has anyone tried this and do you see any problems?

I would think that adding 8" would put a lot of strain on the hitch. I don't know how much tongue weight your trailer has.

You could just leave the gate at home and see how much clearance that gets you.

I would take the gate off before I took a chance on screwing it up.

I'll saw a guy I used to work with put two ATVs in the bed of a step-side...lol
He used to stand on up against the cab with the other one behind it ,hanging on the gate.

I would like to leave the gate at home but the atv is just to long the wheels would hang out the back. Currently they sit about 6 inches onto the tailgate.

From everything I can research it say I have 630# tongue wieght on my trailer. I read somewhere where 8" extension loses 65% of hitch capacity. Anybody know what the tongue wieght capacity is on the 5.4 screw with 3.55 gears?

Idk how you're trailer is set up, but if it is like my cargo trailer, (ex. no propane tanks, etc. on the tongue) I had to remove the trailer jack when pulling it behind my bronco to keep it from hitting the spare tire in turns. With it removed had enough space to drop the tailgate. Also after I got to looking it said to remove before towing.

I think i would look at removing the tail gate and somehow clamping a 2 x 12 above the bumper for the tires to set on... and you wont screw up the tail gate. That truck can easily pull a 5000 pound trailer. Tounge weight should only be 500- 600 pounds or so. Too light and it will fish tail the truck.. To heavy and you over load the hitch. Normally its how you load the trailer equipement inside that makes it balance. Trailer manufacturer might recommend what the hitch weight should be. Also the tounge hitch will have a weight stamped on it. I dont think i would extend it 8 inches, i would get one that has two holes and use the rear hole to move it back 3-4 inches, then let the ATV tires set on a plank above the bumper as i said...... also,. you could lay a 1/2 inch sheet of plywood in the bed that sticks out 12 inches or so, then slide a 4 x 4 spacer under it setting on the bumper and holding the plywood up level, nail thru the ply into the 4 x 4.

Since the tailgate mounts on two stubs and is restrained by two cables, consider making a "short", simple metal "gate" that stays down but is short enough to be out of harms way.

Maybe a Piece of Plywood the length of the bed & just past the ATV wheels.
