I want to trash the stock running gear on my 82 bono, so I went looking for a donor truck. What I came up with was a 79 f250 with 1ton axles, they are 8 lug and the guy said for 300 I could come out with my torch and take the sections of frame, all the steering junk, and the alloy wheels . My only questions are that has anybody done this and what do I really need to do to get leaf springs on the front as far as spring perches are concerned.
You say that its an F250 with 1 ton suspension? Are you sure? that gen 250 sometimes had a Dana 44HD which is just a beefed up Dana 44 with 8 lugs. If that's the case then swapping it for yours is really just a SAS. Won't really be much stronger, per se. As for cutting those frame sections and trying to section them into yours...I have to say I think that is a terrible idea. All you'd prolly end up doing is ruining 2 trucks.
The rear axle on that 79 should be a D60, if so then I believe that will bolt right up to your truck with no mods. Newer trucks have ABS to worry about. As for swapping the front, check our FullsizeBronco.com they have an entire forum dedicated to solid axle swaps.
I just said section for the removal, and I have a d44 in my barn and these are way larger, it came from a game warden who did a few things to his truck , he's dead now and nobody knows what he did, all I can see is the boxed frame and the larger axles, also available are a front and rear ton and a quarter axles from am old international and I don't even know what that would take to swap. So it looks like I just have some wrenches to turn and nothin major other than that
Right ,I know it will take some work , my main beef was the steering assembly and since I've looked into it, its pretty basic swap in regards to any leaf spring conversion if its a d44hd would that explain the larger housing because its larger than one I have in the shop, either which way I'm gettin a front and rear d44hd(I guess from what I'm told) 8lug for 300 bucks with rims tires springs the whole setup.
Turns out that f250 was a custom order, he had a 400 in it, I don't know where he got the rear end, I've never seen it, only thing I can compare it to in size is the d80 that's in the back of my dodge, but I highly doubt that that is what it is, I know now that the front is the stock d44hd as for the rear, I can't find any cast numbers ( rust).
Yeah it may be a dana 70. But those were usually dually setups. 73-79 had no dually bed. Just a flat bed dually. However also I would check frame width between the trucks as I believe a dually of that era had a narrower frame to tuck wheels in. But I have seen d70 in sew. Not sure if it was an option or not from Ford.
There are SRW D70s so that is a possibility. A d60 rear isnt really stronger than a 9 inch. See if you can find a D70 or a Sterling 10.25 if you are looking for strength.
If you cant get the BOM number you can probably identify it by the housing and differential cover. Slight differences between the D44 and D60.
