nervous speedo

I pulled both my speedo cables out tonight to try and settle down my jumpy needle and noticed my upper cable is very rusty and stiff. I tried lubeing it but it looks too far gone. Where is a good place to get a new one parts stores don't seem to list the short cable (its only about 3ft long) and all i really need is the cable not the housing. I have that goofy ratio adapter so finding one in a bone yard arount here is slim, i've been looking for one but no luck.

LMC truck (lmctrucl.com) has the parts, not very expensive either. Or NapaOnline. Autozone has a universal repair kit if you just want to replace core. But if the core is bad/rusty it probably damaged the the jacket and a new core might still hang up on the old jacket. Had the same problem with my old 84, replaced the cables and it still did it. I think it might have been the cruise control adapter. was going to replace with 1 piece cable and leave cruise out, but sold truck.

God I guess I am just damn lucky to have my 84 the way it is. Everyone else's seems to be nickel and diming them. I dont understand, mine has none of these speedo issues? Mine jumps a little bit but its not that bad. It only happens when im pulling a pass @ 65 with a trailer on the back cause its got an extreme load on it. But anyways. Oreilly has that small speedo cable. It might have to get ordered from NY or some other warehouse but they got them.

ok replaced the upper cable today with no change. Has anyone had any issues with the ratio adapter for the cruise? By the way i got mine working today it hasn't works in years, i must not have adjusted the vac switch on the brake pedal when i changed the booster. Does anyone have problems with the drive going out of the t-case? Or is the lower cable my best bet?

I guess you could try getting the 1 piece cable. I think that little block in the middle is for cruise, so youd want to get one for an 84 4x4 without cruise.

Course it may not change anything....mine bounces at low speeds and smooths out as i pick up speed. As long as its working i dont complain...

so if it fluctuates that much at high speed does it mess with the odometer?

Mine used to do that. Caused my E4OD to shift all kinds of crazy. Drove me nuts trying to get the cables working right. Come to find out I had a worn out gear in the Tcase. The teeth would catch and work ok at slower speeds but at higher speeds it would start jumping teeth. Replaced both the plastic gears and it's been working great since.

Ok so i was trying to count the teeth in the t-case and as the cable was hanging in my face i noticed there was a rubber ring on the outside the hold down clip, this gots me thinking i weasled the ring to the other side and tried putting it on, didnt fit to well but i had a hunch so i grabbed the cable and wiggled and pushed really hard and it popped down farther in the t-case, and bingo I'm in the zone that needle is steady as a sniper!
