My wife was driving the truck yesturday and she noticed that it was riding kind of rough. Next thing you know BANG!!! she immediately pulled over, gave me a call and said "honey, it's bad, i'm seeing things that I'm pretty sure that I'm not supposed to ever see". When I got up there I saw that the T-Case exploded. Not too sure what happened. Was looking at some other forums and posts and others have had the similar issues and all sorts of things come up from faulty U-Joints to hubs being engaged to the trasnfercase automatically engaging itself. This sucks. I guess its back to the junk yard. Am I right that this is an NP 273? 99 F250 7.3L
Not to make matters worse but are you positive your wife didn't have the transfer case locked in while she was out and about??? Was there about a 2 quart spatter path showing on the ground of trans fluid....??
Exactly. In all the years of driving Ford trucks I've never seen a T-case grenade like that.
Not to get to far off base but can a transfer case be sabotaged, like a small screwdriver tossed in to make matters worse!! Just figuring, nothing suprises me anymore.
I saw one do that not long ago....Product of a weak spot in the case IMHO. Yours looks to have started the crack in about the same place as the one i saw. The one we had blow up had no internal damage (bearing chain gear wise ) just a blew apart. Not terribly hard to change.
No, it's not hard to change, just didn't want to spend the $400 or so to do it right now. The thing that sucks more than anything else was that on the way to find my stranded wife, a damn CHP officer pulled me over and ticketed me doing 80 in a 65. I told him that I was frustrated because I couldn't find my wife but he didn't give a crap. The A-Hole didn't even ask if I needed help finding her. But to my wifes side, she didn't have the 4 wheel drive engaged when crusing down the road. It was just the wrong transfer case at the wrong time i guess. Oh well, I guess the important thing is she is okay....The wife I mean.

always appeal speeding tickets, cops rarely show up - so you will win and it gets erased
they are also paid to assist the public in need and paid to follow the laws they enforce but how often do you see a cop speeding down the highway in his civilian clothes not on duty or not using a blinker to change lanes or following to closely? the list goes on and on.....
