I am doing my second oil change on my 6.4. I went to my dealer to buy oil and air filter. ( I already have a couple ford oil filters and fuel filters) Well They want $6.51 per litre of Motorcraft 15w40 CJ-4 oil, and $125 for the airfilter. I can buy CJ-4 oil at a parts store for much less but I want something that is equal or better then ford motor oil. What do you guys use???
That'll give you some idea of what most guys choose to run. I run full synthetic 5w40 because I live in a harsh climate in winter and need something to help with cold starts.
And if you search the forum I think there are a bunch of threads discussing this oil topic. The benefit of having the dealer do it is you usually get a tire rotation as well. I don't want to take all those bolts off since I don't have an air wrench, and jack stands. If you have multiple Ford dealers call around - they don't all charge the same price. Also, go to your dealer's website. They often offer coupons for the service. Around here I can usually get the oil changed and tires rotated for $99.00 which is not too bad.

At Wal-Mart you can find 5-quart jugs of Motorcraft 15w40 CJ-4 rated oil for less than $14.00. Three of them and a $18.00 FL-2016 and you're done. About the cheapest you'll pay for an oil change on one of these.
Lots of places sell Motorcraft fluids and filters, you just have to look. ANY CJ-4 rated oil will do fine in your engine, no need to stick with Motorcraft. I used it because it was the best value for my '08.
That's right. So you have $60 bucks in it, and you still have to do the work and take back the 15 qt.s of oil to WM and clean everything up and rotate your tires. Try to get your tires rotated for $39. For me, its worth the $40 to avoid the hassle if you can get the $99 deal.
I agree - I have 22K on my 08 and don't need an air filter yet. I got one from Dieselfiltersonline.com when I ordered my fuel filters to save the shipping cost. But I haven't needed it yet. And wait until you see what the dealer wants to charge you to change the fuel filters. Cha-Ching! I ordered them online and took them to a local shop who charged me 1/2 hour labor to change them. Something you can do yourself, but a mess, and a hassle.
I only have 8200kms on this old girl....lol... Also our Walmarts in Canada dont sell Motorcraft.
I want to buy the best but also know my dealer is charging me way to much.

If you are interested in quality, look at other oils than Motorcraft. It's a fine oil, but if you can only get it at the dealer I'd surely look elsewhere.
Shell Rotella is my favorite, and can be had much cheaper than the price you quoted the Motorcraft at. Chevron Delo and Mobil Delvac are also great oils. Each of these is as good or better than Motorcraft oil.
I buy Motorcraft oil because of the value, not quality. I buy Motorcraft filters because of the quality, even though they aren't always the best value. Stick with Motorcraft filters and any good name brand CJ-4 diesel oil and you can't go wrong!
