"wasnt a really long time at 230* I would say no more than a couple more minutes"
That is a LONG time at those temps....IMO
The difference is you were towing a load (not sure how heavy). Not to mention most tow tunes (unless custom) specify no more than 8k unless it is an unlimitted tow tune like Matt at Gearhead writes that do not mess with fuel parameters.
Coincidentally, what type of tuner are you using?
If the constant overheating that is happening now occured after you ran hot while towing with the tune you used.....I would consider doing a CO test with the coolant if the other minor fixes don't yield results.
Cool buddy. I hope it works out for you. If you have towed before with the tune, then a component must have failed like the t/stat or something else like the fan not operating properly. I have Matt's tunes and the first thing he told me was to leave the EGR valve plugged in....not sure if Eric offers the same advice. Then again everyone tunes a little different.
Eric, never told me to leave the EGR plugged in... I guess you learn things the hard way sometimes..
I took the truck for a 30 minute ride and I think I may have over filled the degas bottle a little bit because a bunch of coolant forced its way out.. It didnt go over 190* at all though so I thin kI just bubbled a bunch out and had an air pocket so it was over heating..
I really need to tear my garage apart and find that EGR and plug it in..
Can I cut the bottom off and screw it to my First Coast Diesel Intake?
Iv heard some guys buy an extra one put it in the manafold unpluged in close position and the other one just plug it in and zip tye on top this is a form of egr deleate I guess
since these trucks relye so much on the egr being plugged in
these deleate kits should have a pigtail to plug in place of the egr to compleate the circute and make the fan work properly if thats all it is
did the FCD intake have a plug in the egr location
Since you mention a FCDP intake, I assume that the EGR valve hole has been welded closed. Correct? If so, no worries. The valve doesn't have to be installed. Just plugged into the wiring harness. You can just zip tie it somewhere.
I also installed a FCDP egr delete a few years ago and opted to have the intake modified as to keep the EGR in place....glad I did. I am pretty certain you cannot cut the valve, so don't ruin it by doing so. See if plugging it in and leaving it in the engine bay will help.
As for the coolant bubbling out of the degas bottle, once it bubbled out did it maintain the proper level? Once it cools down and equalizes come tomorrow....do yourself a favor and buy an inexpensive CO coolant tester and make sure your headgaskets aren't F'd again.....or tie a latex glove on the open degas bottle filler using a zip tie and run the truck. Let it get up to temp (don't let it idle more than fiteen minutes, if you have the high idle mod...good idea to use it) if the glove stands up and begins to inflate but not like a balloon you're ok......if the glove inflates quickly and blows off or pops then your gaskets are F'd again. Pressure is bleeding through the gaskets. Good Luck
I will give it a shot. Thanks for all the info. I filled the degas bottle to the bottom line and it bubbled over again. It seems like ever since I tuned my truck it runs a little hotterandthelevel in the degas bottle needs to be a little lower.. I am going to dig through my garage and try to find that EGR so I can plug it in! I will keep yall posted. I drove it a couple times today with no issues.
