I was towing a trailer for a friend this past weekend and my truck overheated (into the 230* range). I had my tow tune loaded in at the time. I did some research and found out that when you delete your EGR it wont complete the circuit to the 2nd fan apparently.... When I deleted the EGR I threw it in the garbage (I think)...
Ever since the truck over heated it over heats everywhere I go. (I only drove it twice since that day and it did both times).. even while driving normally in normal conditions (not towing).. I have been driving a car from work for a couple days but I need to get it fixed BAD!
I know some antifreeze boiled out of the degas bottle when it over heated while towing and I just picked up more at the dealer. Could it be over heating because its a little low? The headgaskets / studs were done around 6500 miles ago.... this **** is unbelievible...
Where the heads check for flatness and cracks? To answer your question, yes if the coolant is low enough it could cause overheating, but it would have to be real low. I would get an EGR valve put in there pretty quick if I were you.
Heads were checked and done by local machine shop. coolant is below the degas bottle (its empty) BUT when it was SUPER hot I took the cap off and some bubbled up into the bottle so its not SUPER low..
The thing with the EGR is: I drove ALL last summer without one and never had a single problem.. Could it be my thremostat is acting up or something?
my 03 fan turns on with egr unpluged 03 are a little diffrent though no light either
It's not that the fan will not turn on, it's that it won't go to 100% (being as we have a Varible speed fan on these trucks). You might be right though on an 03 it may not effect the fan operation. That would be a question for cheezit.

I
ok thanks thats what i was getting at I dont know if it operates fully either I did hear it turn on a couple times since the valve has been unplugged
getting ready for a egr deleate and think Ill plug the egr valve back in dont want overheat problems
mix up some gold coolant + distilled water and top up degas when cold. Perhaps you had a bad cap causing to leak and now not enough water in the system properly cool w/o the fan...
I have been ripping my garage apart trying to find the stock EGR and I cant find it to save my life.. My truck has been down for a week and I need to move some stuff this weekend into the new house..
I am going to top it off today and see if anything happens.. I really have my fingers crossed! I picked up a new Ford thermostat to be safe..
look in the classifieds at PSN. I'm pretty sure I have seen a few for just shipping going there. I think it's probably a pretty good idea to change the t-stat. Keep a close eye on it for awhile, and see what happens. Might want to go ahead and install a new degass cap as well while your in there.
Worst case scenario (hope it isnt) is you popped your headgaskets again. 230* for a prolonged period under load can do it.....hope it is something easy and less damaging. Good Luck
I will try and check PSN to see if I come up with something.... It wasnt a really long time at 230* I would say no more than a couple more minutes. I will see if I can change out the t-stat asap and give it a shot.. The cap is no more than 6 months old, can they go bad because of the overheat?
I am 100% sure I drove the truck ALL last summer with no EGR at all so I dont know what the difference would be now??
