Lug problems

I have a 94 f150 and just recently have started having some lug problems. For some reason both sets of lugs on the wheels on the front of my truck just started loosening up. So i replaced the studs and they are still loosening while going down the road. I do have brake dust shields. Could they be the problem or is there something else? I have had the brake dust shields on it for a while now and had no problems till now. I have to torque each wheel down at least once a week for the lugs to stay tight. Please help me out if you can.

Seems strange..
How long did you run the shields without problems?
Are you using a torque wrench to tighten the nuts? If so, how tight?

You might try removing the shields for a couple of weeks and see it makes a difference.

Are your lug nuts open or closed end , if they are closed end they could be hitting the end of the lug before the wheel is tight , worn wheel ??

Im using a torque wrench at 110lbs to torque them. and i probably ran the dust shields for about 2 months. But since the first time it only takes like a couple of days for the lugs to come loose and within like 5 day you can loosen the lugs with your hand.

Did you change the lug nuts before the problem started? Did you press them in and over torque them and back them off and retorque them? Are you sure the Lug Nuts are a matched set for the lug studs ?

No it had the same lugs on it since i put the wheels on it and i have had them wheels on it for over a year. And no we didnt over torque it when putting the studs in. It has just started up randomly out of nowhere.

When you put new studs in did you press them into the hub? Or pull them in using the lugnuts? May e they didn't go in all the way at first

Safe to assume you are running stock rims and lugs for your model year? Not trying to run some 2000 model year rims are ya?

And you haven't really directly answered the question,

Did you have trouble with the lugs coming loose before installing those dust shields?

If not, problem started after installing the shields and you are running stock wheels/lugs for your model year then it sounds like the shields create heavy enough vibration to loosen the lug nuts and do so quickly.

Either remove the shields or try some thread locker on the lugs, see if thread locker is enough to overcome any harmonics/vibration created by those shields.

Myself if I had to use thread locker to keep the lugs tight, because of some A/M dust shields I installed keep brake dust off the rims?
I'd loose the shields, clean the rims now and then when I washed the rest of the truck to keep the brake dust off the rims!

Yea we pressed the new studs in and I lifted my truck in october 2010. So i dont think it would have anything to do with it being the wrong wheel with the truck. I gave all the information to my local tire king store and they ordered the style bullet hole wheel i wanted so i am just assuming they gave me the right wheel.

I was just looking around and just thought I would comeback by this tread and post what the real problem turned out to be. So apparently the studs and nuts where not "heavy duty" enough for the 35" tires and 10" offset on the wheels. They only broke off on the front and apparently the stress on them from turning those tires were to much for them. This was sort of quote words from an auto garage in town. And it may sound a little strange cause I couldnt believe it either but it worked because I have had no problems with them for over a year now.

Makes me wonder if the replacement studs were some of the "best Chinese quality" or for a car instead of a truck.
