Welcome to FTE!!!! First things firs.......is it an auto trans or a manual? And don't be scared, there are enough knowledgeable folks on here to help you out. We just need to know as much info as you can provide. We will help you get things sorted out!!!!!!!!!
Welcome, yes your 390 is an FE engine, Is your tranny manual or automatic? I believe the reverse light switch depends if its a auto or manual trans. as far as the 8 and 7 prong light switch i'm not sure, but I would replace it before messing with dashlights and other light problems because the bad switch is probably causing it. How this helps
is there a photo i can find, i have no idea where this is located, and how do i hook it up...is it the NSS or is there another switch for my reverse lights to work.
On '74's the neutral start switch is located under the dash on top of the steering column just before it passes through the firewall. This switch works both the neutral start function and the back-up lights.
The oil pressure sending unit is located on the oil filter adapter. This is on the drivers side towards the front of the engine. The temp sending unit screws into the intake manifold just behind the distributor.
Also "FE" is the engine family that includes the 360/390 engines. Unless your VIN's fourth character is "H" or the engine has been replaced chances are you have a 360 rather than a 390. A lot of 360's "magically" become 390's when the truck gets sold. On the VIN "Y" as the fourth character is for a 360.
Externally there is no difference between the two and the only actual difference is a slightly longer stroke on the 390.
Here is a picture of the neutral start switch. It attatches to the steering column with two short screws and is activated by a lever that clips to the shift tube in the column.
automatic trans = C6, the light switch may be affecting your dash lights, or could be a bad fuse I would check both, the reverse lights could be anything, the NSS, a bad fuse, or need rewiring, I would think a 8 prong switch would work as long as all the wires are hooked up correctly.
