Does anyone have any idea how much weight my 2005 F-150 tailgate (in the open position) will support? I have an electric golf cart that weighs approximately 1200lbs. I have a crewcab short bed and I would say a majority of the weight is on the rear axle of the golf cart sitting on the tailgate. Can anyone provide any inputon this?
The tailgate is said to support 500lbs, IIRC.
The weight of that cart is primarily the back half...so if I were you I'd try to load it backwards (tail of the cart closest to the truck's cab).
The thing to really remember is that your overall, total, load rating is going to be close. My '06 SCrew (crewcab) can handle a little under 1500lbs total. So your cart, me, and a friend would be over the rated capacity.
Check the sticker just below and to the right of your driver's door, near the rocker panel.
Might be worth the $600-800 spent to pick up a small trailer. Just my $0.02
My Rhino is around 1200 pounds too. I've only done this once for about 275 mile trip. There is a pucker factor driving up the ramps hoping the tailgate/cables don't break. I'm thinking of making some extra support brackets like these: DG Manufacturing Home Page (Chrystal aint bad either )
Tailgate weight is not a great concern here. The top of the tailgate is relatively thin metal. If its "hit" with massive weight the sheet metal can bend inwards.I had this situation with my 97 XL.The Previous owner had evidently loaded some very heavy equipment, and it had bent it in so bad,the entire tailgate was bowed outward. You couldnt tell from the back with it closed, but the latch didnt even want to work correctly after the "incident".
The truck can handle the weight just load the cart in backwards so that most of the weight is towards the cab. If you plan to do this on a regular basis either a trailer or upgraded rear leaf springs is suggested. By upgrading your rear leaf springs you should be able to carry the cart and the passengers with little issue and the rear end would not sag as bad as what v10's did.
My truck has a lowering shackle kit on it so it REALLY squated. I have since gotten a trailer.
Well that certainly changes things a bit. I would still upgrade the rear leaf spring if you plan to do it on a regular basis to ensure there is no issue.

I have been looking closely at my Cables - 5 years old now... I use the tailgate to load the Quad in the summer and the Sled and the winter... no doubt they have seen some usage! My quad is about 600lbs then another 225 with my fat a$$ on it
These look like a great product and the best thing is, you can lock the Tailgate as well so some Toolbag Doesn't steal them..
So I just ordered a set of these for myself (Early birthday gift)
