Golfcarts and shortbeds

Hi,

I am going to drag my wife into this but I am investigating the possibility of transporting a golf cart with us to For Wilderness in October. I have been looking at some carts and some set ups. Most of the research I have seen has bee in the back of DRW trucks. I am looking to see if anyone does this with a SRW short bed. I am figuring if I can get it into the back of truck, I might have a few leads on carts for loan or purchase. Unfortunately, a Toyhauler and or a DRW truck is not an option at this time.

Thanks for the insight.

Keeping my eye on this thread. I just upgraded to a 250 so that I can bring a golf cart to campgounds with us. I am curious as to what others do.

What are the carts dimensions compared to the bed space?

Long or short bed - Be careful of overloading your tailgate straps...
It could end up pretty bad should you have a failure and it's not unheard of...

Well I'm working on getting some dimensions on a couple of them. I know the tail gate cannot be dropped as I will be towing my trailer. I'm thinking the short bed might be too short for a cart.

Finally got dimensions. The short bed is going to be too short. It's 91 inches at smallest. The bed is 80 inches. Darn.

That's nothing a set of ramps or 2x8's can't cure. Cart in tailgate up boards rest on the tailgate. Should be plenty high to clear the trailer. I seen an F150 do this on our trip to NC.

Yeah...I cannot see anything going wrong with that. We are going to look around for a local rental place near Orlando. If I can find a place in which I can drive to and back, then I will forgo the rental with the mouse. The mouse has cracked down on off site rental places making deliveries over the last 2 years. Last year, they clamped down on RV/ golf cart combo deals. The last I heard, the new deal is you have to go off site to make the pick up of the cart and trailer up. Then return the trailer to the renting company. Then the mouse is making x amount of miles off property in which the exchange can take place. I might have another lead (sorta of a friend of a friend deal) in the Orlando area for a cart.

There was a cart for sale locally that was $1000 bucks locally. It was a 2 seater but the owner didn't know what the batteries were like. If it needed batteries no problem. Adding a rear bench no problem as well.

Times like this make wish I had a long bed. Long bed no problem. However, my wife and I are thinking about our next trailer. It is looking like we might get a toy hauler if we can find a model and style we can agree on. If we had one, that 1000 dollar cart would have been at my house getting new batteries and bench for this trip.

Depends on the model and options. From what I could tell around 800 pounds with batteries for a 2 seater. Probably around 900 with the rear bench set up.

Put a sheet of 3/4 plywood in the back and then drive the cart on top of it.
That should be enough support.

I suppose you can't tip it up like a sled.

I've got a tool chest in the front of my bed and had the zl440 in it so it had to sit back further.

How do you have the sled tied down? Are you worried about taking out the tailgate with the sled in that position?

I had 2 straps on the control arms to the front cargo hooks.

The rear I just went through the skid with a strap to the cargo hooks.

The front of the sled is the heavy part.

I didn't say it was a great idea but I have seen it done. Me and my wife had this convo in the spring. We decided to skip buying a cat for a few reasons. One kids always want to ride thier bikes so bikes are in the back of the truck. Two just in case we found something else to buy or bring back from a trip we would like to be able to. The last reason the more we camp the more we realize allot of campground don't permit personal golf carts. So instead of buying maintaining, storing, loading and unloading we decided if we wanted to cart around we would just rent from the campground. Less hassle for us.

Ah gotcha. I never been around snow mobiles/ machines/ sleds hence the lack of understanding about them. However, that does make sense.

Yes we noticed many places do not allow personal carts for various reasons. The campground my BiL stays at allows carts for seasonal site holders but not weekenders. However, our two long trips Myrtle Beach and Florida, both campgrounds allowed carts for transportation on property. Personally, I looked at the investment on my end. If I were able to bring it down with me to Florida and return, I could recoup my investment plus some. One of my family members offered his cart to use if I had a way to get it there. Trust me the gears were turning for the free use of the cart vs paying the mouse tax on the cart.

$200-220 a week is usually not bad for a cart at a campground. However $420 a week at Disney is. Factor in the extra days for the cart, I am close to 600 for the time me and the family are there.

The wife and I would like to look at toy haulers in the future. It would be nice to see if they are really going to be a fit for us as our next unit. However, we are thinking once we move to another house with property we would starting thinking about another trailer. This is not going to happen for a few more years unfortunately.
