What would be the best adhesives to use to glue in the window channels and felt wipes? Should I use the same adhesive for both or is there one to use for the channel and another for the felts? I've read in the past about people using 3M #08011 Weatherstrip Adhesive or 3M #08609 Urethane Windo-weld. I just want to get it right the first time.....if that's possible.
The felt wipes need more than glue to hold them in position. I have used small head screws or rivets in the past. You need to make sure the rivet or head of screw is down deep and nto touching the glass. The window channel fits in a groove and weatherstrip adhesive works fine. I have also used silicone caulk to hold the window channel in.
Just remember to get it clean before gluing, dirt does not help glue stick well.
Shane, I agree with the idea of the tiny tapered screws for the felts. But, on the window channels, they popped into brackets inside the doors. There was no glue needed. Jag
I used Weatherstrip adhesive on my window channels, I put the one piece window from Mid Fifty in. My windows kept popping out when it got a little resistance from the new felts. So I squeezed some adhesive inside the channel and under the weatherstrip tape.
I did see the Urethane Window glue at Advanced Auto Parts yesterday, but weatherstrip adhesive seems to be working fine.
I was talking to the owner of classic haulers a few months ago, forget her name. I ordered the window felt kit and inquired as to the clips that hold the felts in. She said they have a good quality spring clip included with the kit, but she recomended 3M weather strip cement, the yellow stuff. She claims it works great without the clips and in the future they may not include the clips any way. I used both the clips and the adhesive. Belt and Suspenders. BTW, I used the 3M for the weather striping around the outer edge of the door, and it works great.
Thanks everyone!!! I'm just trying to get all my "ducks in a row" before I begin this project and it seems like, although somewhat straight forward, this isn't the easiest thing to do.
