MY TRUCK NOW HAS 2000 MILES ON IT AND MILEAGE HAS INCREASED WITH EVERY TANK SO FAR. FIRST TANK I GOT 12.6 AND THE LAST TWO HAVE BEEN 14.2 AND 14.4. THIS IS BACK AND FORTH TO TOWN ON RURAL ROADS AND SOME MAIN ROAD DRIVING AT 60+/-MPH. I SHIFT OUT BETWEEN 2500 AND 3000 RPM WHICH STILL GIVES ME ENJOYABLE DRIVING. SOME OF THE INCREASE MIGHT JUST BE MY LEARNING HOW TO DRIVE THE TRUCK TO IT'S POTENTIAL.
I'M LEAVING IN ABOUT AN HOUR FOR MY WEEKEND HUNTING TRIP WITH MY BROTHER'S CAMPER. WE REFIGURED THE WEIGHT WITH WATER TANKS FULL AND ALL OUR GEAR AT APPROX. 9200LBS. SINCE I AM A NUMBERS JUNKY I WILL BE KEEPING TRACK OF MILEAGE AS WELL AS HOW WELL IT PERFORMS WITH THE LOAD. THINGS LIKE HOW IT PULLS HILLS IN WHAT GEAR @ WHAT RPM AND @ WHAT SPEED.
MY BROTHER'S "PULLING RIG" IS A 2001 CHEVY SILVERADO 4X4 CC 2500HD WITH A 6.0L GAS AND A 4SPEED AUTO. IT IS RATED FOR 300 HP @5200 AND 355LB/FT @4000. IT ALSO HAS 4:10 GEARS. WE TOOK THIS SAME TRIP LAST YEAR WITH HIS AND AVERAGED 8MPG. THE THING WOULD NOT HOLD SPEED ON ANY TYPE OF GRADE UNLESS IT SHIFTED DOWN TO THIRD AND @75MPH THAT WAS ABOUT 3400 RPM. ANY SUBSTANCIAL HILL CAUSED A SHIFT INTO SECOND AND 5000PLUS RPM THE REST OF THE WAY UP. NO LOW END AT ALL! (YES THERE IS A LITTLE SIBLING RIVALRY HERE)
IF I GET BACK EARLY ENOUGH I'LL POST MY RESULTS SUNDAY NIGHT.
I love all this discussion about gas milage. Did anyone out there really think that a V10 would get even fair gas milage? No, you bought it for the V10 emblem on the fender, and the looks it gets. And we can't forget the looks of fear from the tree huggers and their electric hybrid cars when they unwillingly change lanes when you blow by them.
I think we should all admit our selfish reasons and accept them.
By the way, I get 15 - 16 on a trip in the summer.
moisture is doing something with the fuel burn time.......old school here, in the 70's we injected moisture into our motors......i forget what we accomplished , except speed was increased and , and ,and ............jeez , i hate gettin old........maybe more molecules in that ratio of fuel......it worked in my 1970 440 ci, double 4 barrell, dodge dart............d/ft
No, I didn't buy the V10 to get good mpg, but I do keep track and I think of trying to see what you can get for mpg is like seeing how fast it'll take off or how well it pulls, it's just something to do. The best I got was 16.5 on about 200 miles. I think the reason I did so good was I made a 70 mile trip where I got behind a vehicle that I didn't get a chance to pass. The guy would slow down to 50-55 going up hills then back up to the speed limit of 65 down hill and on the few flats. I have thought about this, and as near as I can tell, try to keep the throttle at the same spot all the time instead of maintaining speed, and coasting down hill when you hit the speed limit. I'm sure this would greatly help. I've thought it might be fun to play with if by installing a hand throttle you can lock into position, but it probably wouldn't be a good idea because you'd have to remember to take it off if you had to stop suddenly.
