I recently disconnected the waste gate on my 99 f250 4x4 and after a night of getting on it pretty good my check engine light came on but does not stay on. I believe I built alittle over 30psi but not positive cause I was focusing on the engine light. Has anyone else ran into this problem?
I don't believe that overboosting will set the check engine light, check and see what codes show up, but I would say that it was low ICP, if you stay on it long enough the stock hpop wont keep up with enough oil for the injectors, and bring the ICP down low enough to set the CEL, but after a few min of driving it will go off since it no longer sees the low ICP condition
I also wouldn't recommend disconnecting the wastegate, you don't really gain anything. It actually works better with it, if it is adjusted correctly. And be leary of the edge evo, they like to eat auto trannys as well. Just something to think about.
Just pulled 6 codes. They are P02838 Turbo sensor A circuit high input, P1249 Wastegate fail steady state test, P0500 Vehicile speed sensor malfunction, P1670 EF feedback signal not detected, P0478 evhaust press. control valve high input, P1211 injector pressure above/below desired. I would love to get rid of the edge evo and get a 6 position chip because it has alrwady ate up one tranny.
I cleared the codes and took the truck for a test drive and the light still comes on but with only 3 codes now. It still has the ICP code and the wastegate fail code and the turbo sensor A circuit code.
i think the turbo sensor A circuit is the overboost one from memory 23psi or over and it will come on and defuel the engine as it thinks something is wrong. i have one of clays overbooost thingys coming in the mail to trick the computer to think it is not getting over that range.

I guess there is conflicting info on disconecting the waste gate and maybe we are talking about two different things. Disconecting the red line that goes to the waste gate actuator is different than disconnecting the waste gate. Disconnecting the red line will keep it from "blowing off" too early and enable to build more boost. I have been told my many people that it does help and I have done it to mine. I have never gotten a code for overboost even at 30psi, but maybe my chip has a boost fooler built in.
Nope Alex, the stock split shots are some of the most "oil hungry" injectors there are. However that's not to say that your hpop could do better either, you would just have to do some WOT runs and record ICP and % duty cycle.
Jason-I guess to each his own. But when it comes down to it, when you are pushing a turbo at the line, or over on its map, it will live much longer with the wastegate, that is adjusted correctly and working properly.
The wastegate "blowing off" is doing exactly what it is designed to do, manipulate drive pressure to allow the turbo to spool quickly yet not get so excessive with drive pressures that it shortens the life of the turbo.
Either way, disconnecting the red line or not, there is not much at all to be gained. The stock turbo is so small, and it can easily be pushed out of its map with a tuner or chip, as well as the drive pressures.
I know my 03 did the samething..appx 22 psi. Truck would defuel and cel light comes on ..only for a few minutes....installed clay's boost fooler. Adjusted actuator rod to relief at 30 psi...no more problems..
I would reconnect the wastegate and adjust it just like joey's at 30psi. The boost fooler from Clay will eliminate the defueling past 22-23 psi.
As far as the CEL coming on because of low ICP pressure, it doesn't hurt anything. I used to have it happen all the time way back when I had stock inj. If you would not like it to come on, and get a little more performance, then you could look into a modded *17 pump from Clay or Joey.
