1998 Ford Expedition approx. 318,000 listed miles, but V8 Caprice engine (unknown mileage).
History:
I had my radiator replaced in Feb due to a crack in the side housing. I foolishly let the leak continue so long that I assume it has created additional problems. Not knowing if the current problem has anything to do with the prolonged leak, it is just FYI.
Current problem:
My rear differential is leaking oil. I wish I could find a way to post the pic I took because it shows the leak. What I'm trying to find out is what my next steps should be. Such as, how to decipher if it is just a blocked airway or if it is more involved...like bearings needing replacement. I am in no way an afficionado so please excuse my ignorance. I have a beginners DIYers knowledge, but I am grateful for any assistance.
You need to replace the diff cover plate. It is holed either because it is damaged or rusted through.
Once the new cover is on you will need to refill the diff with fresh fluid.
The cover is easily removed by taking out the ring of bolts.
Removed the rear end and found that the spider gear was broken. Not sure if I can buy just one, but hoping I can. I've only found kits and sets. Any suggestions?
Unfortunate but there you go.
I think you are going to have to get a set.
Try drivetrainspecialists.com and also try Randys Ring and Pinion (google it).
Make sure there is no damage on the ring gear and be sure to clean out the diff case well.
FYI: for novice (such as I am), the gear oil requirements for the 98 Expedition is 3 quarts of oil and 1 bottle of modifier. Not sure what years this applies to. I called the dealership to find out.
You will need something like 85w90 gear oil but you will only need the friction modifier if you have a limited slip diff. The axle code on your door sticker or the tag on the axle should tell you what you have.
UPDATE: Left one spider gear in place, put the rear end back together so it's driveable for a bit, and ordered the kit. Everywhere local wanted to sell the entire back end. Thanks Lazy K for your help.
