My friend has a posi diff out of an old ford 8.8 and he was gonna sell to me for $50. How hard would it be to take out my open diff and put the posi in? Or would it be easier to have a shop do it for me? Its a 1991 f150 2wd
One question comes to mind, what vehicle did the Trac-Loc come from? There is a difference in the number of splines from a car versus a truck. Not the end of the world, but changing them is going to drive up the cost to install.
Next question: How many miles on that Trac-loc your friend is trying to sell you? Typical service can vary between 20-60k miles depending on use/abuse. Again, it's not a show stopper but a Trac-loc rebuild kit is going to cost you more than the price of that differential.
Maybe I should have asked this first: what is your skill level and availability to tools to install this? It's not rocket science but you do need a dial indicator and possibly an assortment of shims to get it installed with the proper backlash. It's pretty rare you would need to reset the pinion depth.
It came out of an older f150....im guessing its got original miles from what the truck has cause he changed it to put a detroit locker in..and I got the tools to do anything in my garage lol
ford motorsport makes a reasonable clutch pack for them. 50 is a deal for a carrier, it will have the right spline count on the gears for your truck coming out of a f150
To the OP. If you are asking how to do it, then it is over your head. This is not something you can learn to do by reading a book, or by reading over the internet. It is learned hands on
Differentials need to be set up just right, if not they will tear them selves apart in a few 100 miles. And like other have said. Unless it cam out of a brand new truck, it is most likely worn out
