posi axle question

hi everyone,

well ive started the teardown of my donor truck and have it down to chassis.

i took a picture of the door tag and see the axle code is c5 which according to this site is a 4.10 posi diff.

my question and thought is the gears are the same front and rear but does that mean the front is also posi? i would guess yes but don't know where to find that info.

can anyone give me some info or a link to where to look? please and thank you.

A three character axle code would mean that the front differential is a limited slip.

C5 is limited slip, not posi.

Same thing.

Or maybe I should ask... What's the difference between a limited slip and a "posi"?

Just a mini hijack, how did you do that?

Back on topic, 3rd hit was the best answer.

GM did a fantastic job of marketing this term. 40 years later it still is in use, and confusing generations to come.

Exactly. But a few of us on this forum are Ford truck enthusiasts, and it annoys us a little when others on this forum imply that GM is the number 1 truck manufacturer by using GM terms for limited slip diffs, Flare Side beds and Super Cabs.

Ford term: TracLock (sorry, not sure of spelling)
GM term: Positraction (or posi)
generic term: limited slip

Ford term: SuperCab
GM term: Extended Cab
there is NO generic term for this

Ford term: Flare Side
Chevy term: Step Side (can't generalize to GM 'cause I think GMC used a different term)
there is NO generic term for this either
