been trying to decide if i should get this little maverick or not. as with most things need it about as badly as I need a hole in my head (a matter of opinion...) but I could give it a good home for a little while, and I even know of another guy (my best friend who has always wanted a mav, but taking care of his young family has always been his first priority) who would probably end up with it someday
and I'm naturally attracted to mavs, considering that they are falcon offspring...
so heres the deal:
-72 maverick grabber
-rebuild inline 6 (probably a 200)
-3 speed manual, converted to floor shift
-appears to have a little rust on the behind the wheel on the front fenders, and some on the rear wheel arches like our pickups tend to get. my dad is going to go and check for rust in the floorboards, trunk, etc.
the lady says that it has been in the family since it was new, and that she is asking 1000 for it. before I got a price my thought was around 500 if the rust isn't eating everything else, maybe 750. what do you guys think?
grab it, find a 250 and a 4 speed, hop up the 250, and have fun blowing away V8 powered cars.
Yep.....Makes for one funny face...
"Ya see that, thats a 350 4 barrel....250hp.....Those NOS stickers outta get it about 30hp more....That new set of stick on flames...Hell, thats a hunderd ponies to the rear wheels...."
"Me, I gotta lil 240 6 cylinder Maverick...You know ya got me...."
Considering the price of gas today, I'd leave the 6 banger in there. I bought a one owner '72 Comet 200/C4 in 1979 for the purpose of driving it to work during the second Arab Oil Embargo...got 20/25 MPG highway, 15/17 in town.
It was also easier to parallel park and got faaar better MPG than my 1979 F150 Lariat Super Cab 400/C6 I had bought just before the embargo began.
btw: The Maverick is a Unit Body, so look closely for rust in the floor boards including under the seats, in the trunk, rocker panels, and the engine/trans supports on the subframe that these bolt to.
Also check the body mounts, the front suspension, rear spring and shock hangers.
Go for it. I just bought a 72 Pontiac Lemans. I'm having a blast working on it.Somehow its a stress relief to go down to the garage and scrape my knuckles and curse at it while I'm trying to get it running, lol.
me loves mavericks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! use this photo as inspiration ............. and lets see if you can tell us old farts who the gent is next to it for a few extra cookies ...............
