Just a word of advice from my experience (and in the trailor category, that is admitedly close to none) but when something is purposely made to not fit, for no obvious reason, it's probably designed that way intentionally so that you caaan't use it incorrectly (in a way that would say, draw too much voltage).
Yeah I'm sure there's an adapter out there that fits, just need to find it. Hence the forum post. I'm definitely not going to grind down the adapter to make it fit.
Anybody else have a plug like this in their bumper?
Check your wiring harness that connects your rear tail lights. There is a "T" adapter you can buy for around $20 that plugs directly into your original wiring harness, and drops you a flat 4 harness. You may be able to find a plug to fit your application...but that is another option. I will get the info for you in the a.m. if you want, they had to order mine from their supply house, and I had it the following day.

Sounds good.
Any idea what originally went in there? Was there some standard harnes in the 70's that no longer exists.
there was NO standard... nowadays you pretty much have the round 7 pin and the 4 flat. But 30 or 40 years ago, there were like 6 different kinds.... my friend picked up an old trailer and it had a round plug so he got a round plug adaptor, and even tho it plugged in, the connectors were different. I had to cut and splice it to get it good enough to tow home.

Here is what I purchased...it plugs in directly to your wiring harness, took me all of 2 minutes to install, and it works perfect! (IF your harness is still original underneath your truck) Advance Auto Parts: Vehicle Wiring Kit by Hoppy - Part 40105
I know the major auto part stores have them (around here they were all next day pick-up), you just have to ask them to look up the part number...Hope this helps...
I work part time at a trailer store in the summers and I would strongly suggest getting it wired for a flat four especially if the only trailer you are going to pull is a flat 4. You could also find a round four male end for the trailer and just change the plug on the trailer. The round four is pretty much out dated and you always run into problems with adapters. If you do have to cut and splice wires just make sure to use heat shrink butt connectors and wrap them up really good in electrical tape. We do that all the time and never have any problems. If you do want use adapters I would reccommend you wire a round 7 on the truck and then get an adapter that goes to both the 6 round and the flat 4, that way you can pull any trailer you want.
4 pin for lights only, 6 or 7 pin (depends on trailer plug) lights and brakes and yes you will need a brake controller. If you can not get and or figure out a "plug and play" take it some where and just get it done.
