Track Arm bushing replacement

Just finished replacing the track arm bushings on my truck. A few tips for those who have not done this job. You need a helper. You really need a press. Torching and hammering grows old fast. I have a 12 ton press and it worked. The bushings i got from Clay contain two sets, the narrower ones fit my arm. You need to boil the bushings w/o the sleeves in water for about 2 to 3 minutes, this makes them more manageable to work into each end of the arm. This is where your helper comes into help. I was able to start the bushing into the hole then my help was able to compress it enough with some vice grips to pop it in. This part was not that easy since the bushing cools down fast. Now slide the sleeve in. Also, on one side of the holes at each end of the arm you will notice that one side is tapered slightly, this is side you want to press your new bushings in from. Make sure you grease the bushings. Now you can re-install. Roy

Just a thought, cuz I am getting ready to do these as well. Wouldn't freezing them make them easier to install instead of boiling. Cold = shrinkage, Heat=expansion... Seems to me that by boiling them, you made it harder on yourself.

I think this would depend on the way you wanted it to go. Heat may cause expansion, but it does make them more pliable.

They need to be pliable because the shoulders on the bushings are too large to fit thru the eye. Freezing them would not shrink them near enough. Hey, give freezing a try but i have put in alot of those poly bushings in many different vehicles and found boiling them the easiest way.

Track arm bushings and after driving with the new ones it sure helped the feel of the steering. No wandering and more responsive.

Thanks for the info... I wasn't trying to discount your method, I was just curious about it. I am planning on doing my bushings soon, so thanks for the tip.
