I own a 2002 F-250 w/ V10 and has about 20,000 miles on it. I'm considering getting a supercharger for it but have a few questions/concerns.
1st: What are the long term effects on an engine from a supercharger that wasn't originally built to be equipped with one?
2nd: How reliable are the superchargers? I plan on having my truck for a long time and am curious how long the blowers last.
3rd: I've always worked on my vehicles but nothing that takes 10-12 hours of labor. How easy are these things to install and are there any special tools required?
Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would think it would depend on the type of supercharger, boost and how much you abuse it. I have less than a 1000 miles on the engine with the Kenne Bell Supercharger.

Once again I only have around a 1000 miles with mine on. I would think the type of superchargers that only delivers the boost when you get into the gas like KB and Whipple would last the longest.

I had mine professionally installed and I heard it was a bitch. I know the installation manual for my KB for the V10 was 83 pages long!

I installed a Novi 2000 from Paxton on my 2000 F-250 4X4 about 2 years and 21,000 miles ago. The only problem that I have ever had was the "off the shelf chip" they sent me was not tuned correctly. I had to have a chip burnt on a dyno to get the timing and the mixture corrrect. Since then I have had zero problems except for the PCV hose popped out a couple of times. I don't exactly drive it nice and I have had no problems. I just recently opened up the exhaust (flowmaster catback and no converter) and my max boost dropped from about 7.5 psi to 4.5 psi. So I called Paxton and they told me to remove the inlet restricter that comes with the system. After removing it my boost is back up to 8 psi.
As far as the install it was pretty simple, but time consuming (approx. 12Hrs).
Since I have modified it again I am going to dyno tune it again, and I will post the dyno results if anyone is intrested. I don't remember the results from 2 years ago and I didn't get a printout.
Do you think you lost to boost from having no cats or the muffler as well? I have a Flowmaster catback on my truck but I left the cats on. Do you think I'll have a boost problem? Thanks!
I am not an expert on this, but I noticed a major increase in noise without a cat compared to a flowmaster with a cat. I believe the cats are very restrictive and that is where my exhaust was really choked. I did not notice any boost loss when I originally had just the cat back installed.
If you are serious about a blower on your V10 I would lean toward the kenny bell or any other roots type. I am very happy with my centrifugal type, but I bought an 03 Cobra about 9 months ago and it is insane the amount of boost that a roots type can produce almost instantly at any RPM. However the paxton might increase the longevity of the engine because the boost does come on gradually. I don't know how well these engines will hold up compared to something like my Cobra that was built for it.
Would you give me some specifics on your set up? How difficult the install was and how mechanically inclined you are. I am looking into a blower and have not decided on which one. Cannot find a shop around here that knows anything about domestic charging...a good friend of mine has done almost everything to motors, less a charger but is pretty sure he could do it. Did you just bolt it on and go or upgrade many other things like injectors and such...any regrets? Did you notice a decrease in fuel economy? I have no idea what a charger will do to economy or life of the motor. How many charged miles have you put on it? Any longevity issues that you have noticed? Any info or advice is aprreciated.
I installed mine (a Whipple) about 3 weeks ago. Too early to give any input on longevity, or reliability. Still have stock exhaust. I am very happy with the power. Very, VERY happy.
Did you do the install yourself? What were some of the deciding factors that you went with the Whipple? How many miles were on the X at install time? Did you change anything else other than bold on the supercharger? Air intake? Anything in the fuel delivery system?
THanks
I installed it myself. It took me and a buddy of mine (a race engine builder) about 9 hours. Nothing else was changed, straight stock except for the blower. Knew I wanted a twin screw, just had to decide between the Whipple and the KB. Went with Whiple because after a few calls to KB, they were kind of vague on some questions I had. 3100 miles at the time of the install, on a SD.
My friend in San Jose has a few Saleen Mustangs (a 2000 S-281s and a 99 S-351) that are both supercharged. The only problem that he has had with at all is that the superchagers aren't self contained on them, meaning that they are tapped into the oil pan. He developed a leak on the S-351 from one of the oil lines. Aside from that, everything has worked awesome. I don't believe he has any regrets about the superchargers.
the whipple for the v10 is a self contained oil system. have one. fits f250 99 - 03 v10 and x. never installed brand new in box. have a 2000 f250 v10 5 speed manual work truck. would love to put it on but definite waste to put it on a work truck. rather sell it and be happy with my brute force, sctb 96-98 accufab. superchip, borla headers and split sides. would think i could find a home for it on the best v10 site around. maybe im wrong. worst case scenario ill put my stock intake back on, re stock my superchip tuner and install on my old ladies explorer and install the twin screw whipple (eaton) supercharger kit on my v10 work truck. best offer over 3000 takes it
