WEll I need, want a new truck. About the only thing thats holding me up is this trans issue.. Most of my folks think I would be crazy to spend 58K on a pickup truck. I dont need another SD pos. I had a 02 that was built without a compression ring, it smoked like crazy on start up, was fixed by installing one and honing the cylinder. Ford wouldnt replace the motor. It was never right after that so I lemmon lawed it. It was replaced with the 04 I have now, and though its been OK its had a few things done and is getting wierd now. No one wants it because of its reputation. My cousin asks me how much do you have to spend to get a good truck? I can just hear him updating that statement with 58K still isnt enough.
So, folks with tranny problems, if you could you tell me how much you tow with your truck, and how often. It seems that the problem is a learned problem, because it doesnt seem to happen when new. Could the truck be learning to haul big weights and then when running lite it gets confused.
thanks

Hi and welcome to FTE.... Lots of threads on the transmission issues. Just search and you will read more than you want. There was a receint TSB FORD released to address a lot of these issues but it was pulled by FORD a week after it was released. Suppose to be released again in mid april. Here is a post from a Ford Customer Rep on what the TSB will address. Some people think it's software (TCM/PCM) and some think it's hardware. I had a 2004 F250 and I would recommend getting rid of it ASAP.. I love my new truck but it does shift inconsistent at times. Hopefully this TSB will finally fix it.....
Ya, there is a lot of info on this forum regarding the tranny quirks. Look over the many pages of threads and you will find several relating to the new tranny. Mine is behaving pretty well lately. I had the most recent pcm flash done last month and I think it helped. If it didn't, the sugar pill sure did taste good. I pull an 18k 5er toy hauler. I live at 4500+' elev. and pull my 5er up in the mts. around 9000'. I have no problems going up or coming down. The exhaust brake works fine for me in the mts. if I initiate it before 50 mph. After that speed, it's a little on the weak side. I only have 5600 miles on mine since Aug 2010, but, I'm happy with it. I previously owned a 2007 Chevy D/A, so this isn't my first diesel. Do your research. They are nice trucks.
Thanks guys
I guess I just have to take the plunge and order a new truck. Im wondering what changes 2012 will bring, will these problems be gone , will I like the changes or not. These are the questions that I ponder. I dont tow now but move about 2000 bales of hay a year, not that heavy.
Like I say I have had bad luck with previous F350s. The 7.3 missing a ring. It was ordered and the dealer had it "warmed up for me" when I picked it up. The next morning it was a smoke screen. {You have no idea how much smoke it produced} The dealer tried to BS me. They are closed now, what a shame!!!! [your not used to a diesel, it will brake in, I didnt use good enough fuel] After they tore it apart at 1200 miles it had a cascade of other problems. Then the 6.0 need I say more. It would have been gone long ago but for the 6.4 milage and problems. A friend has had his cab off 4 times. He says dont go Ford but Ive looked GM and Dodge and they dont do anything for me. I hope Ford has it together on this one for I realy dont want to listen to the load I will get from friends if this one gives me trouble.
if you are worried just get the extended warranty, I got 5 years and 100k warranty for $1900, if you are worried the '12 models should be out in september.
The programming release for the trucks that still have some shift anomalies is due out as posted above. If you order a truck today, it will take until early May before you see it. The new truck should have the update when you get it.
The opinions on the actual number of the erratic shifting trucks are widely different...but keep in mind there are 225000 of these trucks running around out there already. I will just leave it at that...
I agree with Rick that the shifting issues should be solved soon. I have driven a new Ford (fleet cars) every year for the last 23. Transmission issues are/were a problem in a number of those vehicles. Each fixed with a flash.
I too was hesitant on buying a first year model, especially one with a new engine and tranny. There have been a number of discussions on this vehicle's overall product quality. Time will tell... I have no regrets on buying, but I am watching the repair trends.
Never had an extended warrenty before but in thinking its time.
I absolutely agree for this truck. I learned on my wife's truck that some of those electrical components can be pretty expensive. And this truck is loaded with them.
I purchased a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty for the first time as this was a new motor and I was a little nervous. I have not had any problems with my transmission's shifting or anything else on my truck. I have 7800 miles and have only towed a horse trailer twice. This summer it will be worked hard pulling a 5th wheel RV and a horse trailer.
