This is my first diesel and my dilemma. I bought a 1999 F250 xlt PSD a year ago with 112,000 miles on it. Had a banks trans done, 4" full exhaust, Intake, wicked wheel, and an Edge on the fly programmer.
I took the truck in after i bought it because after i bought it, nothing the guy was telling me matched up to his story. (he told me he was selling the truck because his father died and he was getting his newer truck for free. I met his wife a week later to get the spare tire and i asked how his new truck was and she said "Oh you know him, he's building another, its all full of parts right now.")
Ford dealership said it didn't have the module to log miles on the truck, but they said it looks like stock milage.
SO... I started having problems this winter. First the fuel line O-rings went (normal i know), then i noticed i had coolant leaking and it was the Water Pump. So i just replaced that and noticed the front axle is leaking like crazy after using it for a couple days.
My question is should i sell the truck? I don't want to be working on it non-stop which is what it has been. One thing after another. I know its old and thing go bad, but i really don't want to have to spend thousands to keep it running, at that point id rather sell and spend the extra money up front to get a solid truck.
Sorry for the long post, any advice is appreciated! Thanks!
Have you pulled a Car Fax or Oaisis report on it? This could also give you a little more insight on the hostory of the truck.
I have 250K on the clock with mine and so far I haven't done anything major except for a new tranny last month. I do have a slight leak from my water pump so I will be doing that soon but maybe giving a complete once over of everything with a few printed out pages from this forum on things that go wrong regularly may help you decide. Some people just throw parts at a truck and call that maintainence. Double check any work he may have said he's done.
Yea, my cousin owns a used car lot and looked the truck up in his database which he said is more extensive than car fox and said everything looked good. He told me that if i didnt buy it he was going to which made me go ahead and feel comfortable about buying it. I know the ball joints were done at 80k from ford.
Oh, also, the guy i bought it from said there has been no body work done and it was always garage kept. Once i got it home and waxed it with a clay bar i noticed the whole truck has been repainted and the bottom of most of the doors is about all bondo...
I know i should have looked at this more extensively when i bought it but i just never noticed the small indications when i bought it.
The things you mention are to be expected on a 12 year old truck. They require maintenence and you have to keep on top of it. You either need to learn to DIY, be ok paying a mechanic and have a good one, or buy a new truck with a warranty. A lot of us had to sort out a lot of unexpected issued at first when buying a used truck. But after its all sorted it'll be a good truck to you (well most of the time, there are horror stories).
Yea. I have been doing the work on it myself and its no big deal, i just want to make sure its nothing out of the ordinary to where id be making the mistake by keeping the truck.
It looks like its all normal which is kinda what i figured, thanks guys.

Mine rearend was leaking and it turned out to be the vent hose was plugged with an insect nest..Unplugged and it fixed it.. you might want to check yours.. just look on the top of the front diff for the hose..
Im gonna try to help out a little too. There are the hoses that run form your front and rear diff. the purpose of these hoses are to vent the air, if the hoses are plugged the air cannot vent. When you drive down the road everything warms up and causes a pressure build up, the hoses allow the pressure to release, if there plugged that pressure is going to try to get out where ever it can which can sometimes be threw the gasket causing you to have a fluid leak also.
Your picture did not work.. try replying to "Go Advance" at the bottom of the page and then click on the "paper clip icon".. then browse for picture from your desktop and up load it..
To be more clear.. "if" your hose is not hooked up to the fitting on the top of the front diff.. it will leak .. My hose on my rearend was completely plugged by an insect causing the pressure to build up like John said from the previous post.. different problem than you have..
