Over on pirate4x4 there is a post on using the E4OD gears to create more power off the line and a better cruising rpm installing them into a C6. Anyone have any info on this or heard of it being done, i like the lack of electronics in the C6 but need more top end, if i can cruise at 65mph i would be stoked. Right now 55 is my cruise. Id rather not regear the diffs and reports are that the above mod is a low buck one.
You cant change 3rd gear, but you can lower the ratio in 1st and 2nd. You're going to need to change the rear end gears or get an od trans to lower cruise rpm's.
yeah the more i read it seems to just the the 1 & 2 gears. But if one was to drop to 3.55 gears and do this mod, the low end should be awesome still, hmmm. gotta ponder this one. anyone know how hard it is to put new gears in the front and rear?
Hey Wreck, I have a C6 with 3.55 in mine and it fairly sluggish of the line and my cruise is 60mph when the engine is turning 2500rpm. I still need to play with my shift points because it only stays in first gear for a couple of seconds and is in second by 12-15mph. I would like it to stay in first a bit longer because it feels like its shifting early and is sluggish in second gear until the rpms come up. My 2-3 shift is happening at 2100rpm or 2400 if I'm really on it. What rpm's are you cruising at?
no tach, sorry there. i can only guess and im at 4.10. If i went to 3.55 id have to either re gear or figure something else out. i shift out of 1st at about 20 and out of 2nd at 40 when mid throttle. You need to adjust the vacuum modulator to adjust the shift points. If it turns out your vacuum regulator valve is bad, i can help there as they are a pretty penny from any place you can find.
I don't think you would notice the difference in 2nd gear with this mod but I do notice a difference in 1st gear with my E4OD compared to the old C6. Hard to say for sure because I think the C6 had the original torque converter on it.
But the nature of any 3 speed planetary automatic, is that 3rd gear is going to be 1:1 no matter what your first two ratios are. The C4, Turbo 350, turbo 400 and chrysler's equivalent transmissions all have 1:1 top/3rd gear ratios.
I've heard froms some guys that getting a good low stall converter can make a big difference in reducing slip in the C6. As far as being sluggish off the line, you will notice a difference particularly when dragging say, 6000lbs but above that you simply hold each gear longer and your rate of acceleration will be the same. However gaps between gears will also be larger giving the impression of "less power".
I regeared my truck but since its 2wd, I only had one set to deal with. Depending on how things work out, you might even find its cheaper to get a complete used axle set rather than buying new ring & pinion sets. Sometimes you can find used gear sets too. I tried selling my 4.10s for $100 a while back and didn't even get a nibble in the local BST. Still have them stored somewhere. Never know when I might need to move a house lol.
Yea my VRV was bad, It wasn't holding any vac pressure and I had no first gear and my 2-3 shift was @ 3000rpm. I needed one for the trip so I had to buy it from the dealership. They got me for $165 + tax and I had to drive 90 miles to get it. I don't have a vac pump or gauge so I've been messing around trying to get it to shift right. I think I need to move up toward the cab a bit more to get a little higher shift points but I like the lower 2-3 shift. I like the idea of the 6 planetary lower first gear, I think that would help alot because I plan to tow with it and use it on the farm.
i changed my 1990 f350 uhual its the c6 but a 308 rear end now i was going to go with the 355 gears but i want top hiway speed. its a slow ride of the line
