I've been through most of my 1979 F150. I've rebuilt the 400 with many performance parts, rebuilt and regeared (4.11) the diffs, including a Detroit Locker and limited slip. Now it's time for the transmission, and it would be nice to have an overdrive. Can a newer overdrive automatic transmision mate between the 400 (same as 460 pattern) and the NP 205 transfer case? Are the newer overdrives as durable as the proven C6?
No the overdrive auto's are not as reliable as the C-6. There was a auto O D behind the newer 460's which would be all that would fit up against the 400. I think it was called an EOD and it was quite problematic and expensive to rebuild.
Even though the AODE have proven itself fairly strong compared to the AOD, you will not be able to beat the strength of the C6. The OD would work fine until you did some serious offroading.
I would have to disagree with the previouse post, and the comment that the OD will will work fine untill you off road with it. The E4OD"s inheirant weakness is not in its 4 wheeelin abilities, it is in its inability to lock up the torque converter while in OD. Structuraly it is very strong, and once rebuilt,(with all of the upgrades) it is a great off road tranny. I would have to agree that you should stay with the C6 unless you are wiiling to go all the way with the swap, including retrofitting the E4OD with an entire performance upgrade. When I rebuilt my E4OD for racing purposes, I knew that with my high HP/Torque and heavy rig set up, the demands on the tranny would be extreme, and I was not looking at saving money. It would have been much cheaper to swap to a C6, but I would have lost the OD. If you are really building your rig for off road then you will be considering much lower gears, at that point OD starts to be very appealing. The E4OD deffinitely has its problems, but 4 wheeling strength is not one them. Later,
Jeff,
I understand that their have been improvements made to the overdrive trans, just like Chevy did with the 700R4. How much did it cost to build the overdrive "right"? what types of improvements have been made? Will it mate with a married NP 205 transfer case?
I have to agree with Jeff regarding the E4OD. Earlier versions of this tranny did have problems but 94 and later versions of the E404 have proven strong and reliable. Jet Performance also sells an upgraded E4OD that eliminates all the flaws in this transmission. I'm a big fan of the C6 but with the price of gas nearing $2.00 a gallon I think a beefed up E4OD would be quite the ticket, especially with a big thirsty V-8. Also I think the cheapest insurance for any automatic is a quality auxilary cooler and running synthetic auto matic transmission fluid.
I sent an email to jet asking if the E4OD would mate with an NP205 transfer case, but have not had a response from them. It would sure be nice to drop the cruising RPM by 30%!
Msbhvn,
Check out advance adapters, they should have the info you need.

...but with the price of gas nearing $2.00 a gallon
I just saw this resurrection and couldn't help but find this quote humorous and tragic all at the same time.
Aside from that, I am looking to replace the C6 in my truck right now for the exact same reason, except gas is now over $4.00/gallon. Are the newer OD transmissions out of the 90's trucks stand-alone, or do they need to be hooked up to the ECU module in some way?
not 100% sure on this but the only non computer overdrive auto from ford would be an aod. pretty sure it was only made for smallblocks and i'm not sure if it came in a 4x4 version. i bet you'd get a better answer in the 87 and up section.
