Gene back, with an '06 F250 Lariat, 6.0 TD....Anyone ever use the programmers? Buddy of mine told me I should grab one to get the best gas mileage and/or performance. What are you guys' opinion on them? Always been my motto to leave well enough alone, but if they help, I would pull the trigger on one...
I did see slightly improved mileage when I had one, but in my opinion it isn't worth the risk. To run a tuner on a 6.0l you need to have multiple gauges added, and ARP headstuds are almost a requirement. If you use the tuner smartly you can avoid issues, but it does raise your risk factor quite a bit. If you are happy with your truck as is, I would leave it that way.
Recommend you go down to the 6.0 forum on this site and do some research on programmers. There are pros and cons and the cons can come with a hefty price tag. My second recommendation would be to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your 6.0 first and then decide if a programmer is for you. However, there are some other things I'd recommend you get before a installing a programmer (upgraded exhaust, gauges (EGT, fuel pressure, at a minimum). Again, you'll find a lot of information about these items down in the 6.0 forum.
