Well i have just cost myself alot of money i just blew the tranny in my 02 f350 powerstroke so my question is i wanna upgrade the torque converter and use a shift kit what else can i use that is not that expensive to beef up the tranny and my second question is how does the torque converter work and by putting in a billett converter in what and how does the enhance the performance of the tranny thanks and hope to here from ya oh ya one other thing i got a price of $2000.00 to r and r the tranny and rebuild it with the better torque converter and adding the banks shift kit is this a good price.
i would give BTS or john woods a call, you will probably find for not much more they will build you a much stronger trans than a stocker with a shift kit
For $2,000 for an R&R plus the transmission they are not rebuilding it. Many people have been caught up in a similar situation to what you have, and they have almost all come back and had issues with the rebuild. Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT go that route.
An OEM transmission from Ford will run you about $2600, and HD4R100 will be about $1,000 more. This transmission has an upgraded TC along with many other parts, that also include the shifting. Add the R&R fee's +/- $800 and you will have a transmission with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.
A John Wood or BTS will run you a bit more, but they include the R&R. BTS offers a "if you break it, we will fix it warranty", so if you plan on keeping the truck, I would invest in the JW or BTS. If you are strapped for cash (most of us are) look into the OEM HD or regular 4R100. Other than that, unless you know the transmission builder, I would leave the truck parked until you save up money for the other options.
Just my opinion, but I have seen far too many people taken by transmission shops.
Definitely look at a bts or jw. I bought a truck with a local rebuilder "heavy towing" tranny and "fragged" the torque converter a long ways from home. Limped it home back to the rebuilder and at 22k they would not warranty it. cost me $1800 for the T.C. alone. Never again, it will be one of the 2 I mentioned. I encourage you to call Brian at BTS or John at JW and talk to them, if nothing else they will answer your questions, both have extraordinary customer service.
If you go with an OEM or HD, get the TransGo Tugger for it. Hands down the best investment I have made for mine. Oh, and a 6.0L cooler too. My stocker is still hanging in there at ~450/1000 rwhp/rwtq. I can't complain... I'm thinking it's about to be time to call BTS though -- it's getting a little "slippy".
thanks for the input and warning but i can trust this guy he has done many for me and everyone one else is coming in about 2500.00 so he knocked off five hundred for being a freind

I also have the TransGo Tugger Kit and it's been great. My truck tows way better now then it ever did with the OEM trans. Your transmission builder should be able to get the Tugger kit for reasonable price.

FYI...
A knowledgeable transmission builder would want to upgrade the torque converter to help hold the power that a diesel can apply. I would be a bit skeptical about a builder who suggests a shift kit (unless it is also accompanied by a heavy duty rebuild kit), especially one from Banks. They aren't transmission experts so any 'kit' they sell probably comes from somewhere else. Tugger and Sonnax make rebuild kits that have upgraded heavy duty parts. This is way different than a basic shift kit IMO.
Here is a link with some good info. You might want to print and make sure your builder reads this as well. Hope this helps.
