Anyone have any trouble with the electric windows? My driver side window is acting up. Passanger side works fine. Sometimes it won't go up & down at all. I took off the plastic cover that holds the window, door lock, and mirror buttons. Nothing is disconnected. Should I try to replace the switches first? There is no funny noise when the window does go up and down. I just assumed it was the elctrical switch.
Pull your switch and clean the contacts. They may just be dirty, it's amazing what can get in there.
I've been helping someone else out with theirs, they replaced the motor before checking the switch and someone else mentioned to clean the contacts before buying a new one. I haven't pull a switch yet, so I really don't know how to get to the contacts. If you can figure that out, clean the contacts and then test the switch to see if it is making good connections inside.
If you have access to a multi-meter, ohm out the switch. My guess is that the center plug is the 12v supply.
For the DS power window switch, there are two plugs into the back of the switch. You would think that one is for the driver side and one is for the pass. side. With just the one plug in that is under the driver side switch, the window will go down but not up, or viceversa. Just a pointer for when you are testing -- both plugs have to be in the switch for the driver window to go both up and down.
After you remove the two plugs from the switch, you will see the white switch assembly held in a black mounting flange, for lack of a better term. Use a small knife or screwdriver to lift the tabs, and pull out the switch assembly. You will then be able to get to the contacts. There are no loose parts to worry about -- when I did this the other day, I was prepared for springs and ball bearings to go every which way (and to go right out and buy a switch).
The contacts (about 8 of them) look very much like the old points on a point-style distributor, a round contact pad on a brass or copper arm. Be gentle cleaning them. I dulled some 320 grit emery cloth on a concrete block, and used that lightly on the contacts.
Thanks for the tips guys. I did not get home until 10:00pm, too dark to pull the plugs out. I will pull the switches out tonight and clean the connections. Will let you know.
