power window not working
power window not working
i have a 4 door 97 F350, and the drivers side rear window will not work with the motor. I took the door panel off and both switches(front and rear) make the motor work. And with the door panel off, you can push the window switch and actually see a little gear on the motor turning, but the window doesnt go up and down.
Soooooo....what needs to come out, and how do i fix it?

From what you stated kinda sounds like you suffer from the common failure known to these windows. Motor spins but window fails to move, maybe even at times falling down and open on its own/fails to hold window up tightly closed.
There are 3 little half moon shape bushings between the motors driven gear and the regulators driven gear, in time those bushings deteriorate almost completely or completely. You only need remove the <strike>window</strike> opps!motor to access these bushings.
If you replace those bushings the window will work again.
Bushing might not be the exact correct term for em but you get the idea.
If you search the forum you'll find people have used a variety of materials to make suitable replacements for them. One guy, IIRC used short pieces of 3/8" wood dowel to make the repair?
Myself I cut them from a solid sheet of nylon I just happen to have, they take a few minutes to fit but once done better then stock I'd have to say.
I read where someone mention they are available from the "HELP" rack at the auto parts, I didn't have any luck when checking there.

ok. While i was doing a search before i did see mention of the bushings. Now, you say i just need to remove the window...i dont understand. I dont need to remove the motor? And how do you remove the window?
Sorry I see I did say "window" didn't I, only need remove the motor to do the repair.
I'll edit my other post to reflect that!
Three bolts hold the motor to the regulator.
Once you have the motor out take the gear box cover off, there you'll find the remnants of the bushings.

well, now i have another question. I got the motor out. Had to drill out 2 places in order to get it out. But when i was taking it out, only one bolt was actually tight....one other one was really loose and the 3rd one had broken off and fell down in the door.
The gear on the outside of the motor still turns with the switch.....do you think mine wasnt working because it wasnt mounted like it was supposed to?

Could be, easier to say being the one took it off.
Hold the gear with channel locks or something and see how much if any power it has behind it.
If can be made to easily skip the bushings are shot, if twists motor out of your hand it just needs remounted.
Either way easy enough to open the gear box and check em that way to, just be sure and pack with fresh grease.
