Hello all, I posted this in the general diesel discussion are but no one chimed in. Hope to get some opinions here.
Thanks.

OK, looking to buy my first diesel truck. And yes Im sure I want and need a diesel. What I wonder is if Im getting a good deal. Im looking at an 05 F250 FX4, SCREW. 6.0L with 148,000 miles. Trusck is clean in and out and the seller is a local guy I know. I can get the truck for $14,000.
Good deal?
Thanks

check nada and that will tell you. if the truck has been maintained like it should i dont see why not but if you ask me its about time for an oil cooler esp being that it is an 05 and prob might wanna do an egr cooler while your there. maintainance is the key to the long life of these trucks. if the tranny fluid wasnt changed and the oil wasnt changed all when needed and done in reg intervals i wouldnt get it because your asking for disaster

All the maintenance was done with the reciepts and all to prove it. Truck has been right here in town its entire life and the seller has had very little trouble with it. On one side that sounds good because from what I have read on here you either get a good 6L or a bad one. But what worries me is since he has had so little trouble is that trouble waiting for me? But again like I said I know the seller and he is very good about maintenance issues so not worried about that.

as long as you dont wanna put a tuner and such on it you should be fine but like i said in my opinion if i bought the truck and with the knowlege i have from this site now, first thing i would do is put a bullet proof egr cooler on it and replace the oil cooler as soon as i got it home. im very picky when buying trucks. i will go as far as making sure the front and rear gear oil has been changed. but as long as the maintainance records are there and look good i dont see why it wouldnt be a good buy. you might have a few problems here and there but thats typical with any truck.

Jocularity! Jocularity!

If your a fan of the TV show M*A*S*H you understand where this comes from. If not catch a few of the re-runs.

To the OP -- Check out the following recent thread for some things to look for. I would recommend checking sites like E-bay Motors, AutoTrader, Kelly Blue, etc. to find comparable trucks in your area to determine if this is a good price or not. You will find that trucks pricing varies widely depending on your part of the country. Also with the price of diesel rising almost everyday, I'm sure some people you don't really need a diesel will be looking to unload them soon if not already.

If the truck has had the STC fitting replaced/updated and the OASIS is pretty clean otherwise, I wouldn't be concerned about buying it. Just be aware that the stock injectors are probably good for no more than 200k miles from what I have read.

If the STC fitting has not been replaced, I would try to get the price down by a few thousand to update this fitting and install a bulletproof EGR cooler (or an EGR delete).

Your right freak, for every Ford 6.0 sold Dodge sold 5 times more with Cummins engines. Look it up.

The 6.0L is a great motor, if I didn't have one I would buy that one out from under ya.
14 sounds good, is that certified?

OK, well thanks for the replies guys. I bought the truck today and of course love it so far. Just got done switching out the radio so I could have the sat. radio back. Ending up paying $13,750. He wanted $15,000 figured I would have to go $14,000 but came to an agreement at the $13,750. My credit union was more then happy at this price. Anybody looking for an 05 F150 4x4 lifted running 35's?

well as long as your happy thats all that counts. As for derailing the thread before the OP asked if the truck was a good deal as it was his first diesel. My opinion is no its not a good diesel because I feel that the 6.0L is more often then not only good as a boat anchor. I feel there is a reason dodge sells 5x the cummins vs ford selling the 6.0L. THe cummins hasnt had to change in years startign from 1989-2007.5. Theres a reason and that is becasue the design works and works and works. sorry he asked for opinions and I gave mine about hte 6.0L

300/6 Freak while I have no problem with you giving ur opinion I do wonder why you are even in this site/forum? If dodge is what you like great go to a dodge forum and have a blast. Why come in here just to talk down fords?
