I think my glow plugs are not working or not getting to the right temp. I cant just get in and go. If its 50 or colder out side and i get in to leave, for about 2mins it feels like its missing. My truck on a cold start dose not sound happy. If i try to drive it before it wormed up it chugs so bad it shakes the truck, when i try to go up hill. I know this is not normal can anyone help?
When started and the temperature is below 70 degree outside, the truck "lopes" at about 600RPM and then when it gets warm it revs up to 1000RPM....After the truck as "warmed up" it runs fine. What should I look at? Any suggestions on what is wrong?
The two most common issues that produce symptoms such as yours are injector issues or FICM issues.
Please verify that your batteries are in good shape - take them somewhere that has good equipment and can individually load test them. While you are at it, I would have the alternator tested as well.
Then, you should test the FICM voltage (KOEO, cranking, 2000 rpms). The Tech Folder has a thread on how to do it.
Has your oil been recently changed? What oil are you using (and what weight)? Do you know when the last time was that you had an update to your processors (flash update)? Have you heard of a product called Rev-X? I understand that it can help some stiction issues, if that is the problem you have.
I'm going to get the batteries tested this weekend and FICM. I'm running 15w 40. Only when is colder then 70 outside it dose this; lopes at 600rpm for about a min then jumps up to 1000. And takes 10 mins to warm up. After its warm it stays at 600 and runs fine. And if i plug my truck in, i can get in and go. I don't know about the updates and the rev-x.
I just had my batteries tested and both are bad. The cold start was 300 on the passenger side and the driver side was 400. The batteries say that 750 is what it should be. Does that sound like the problem? (Thanks for the help.)
I got new batteries and that didnt fix my issues. I checked the FICM today and with the key in the on passion it was putting out 47.8-48.2 with the truck running it was putting out 48.4. So the FICM is good, now whats next?
Have you had it scanned for codes? I had this exact same problem with mine when I purchased it. Plugged in, fired right up. Unplugged sounded like only 1 or 2 cylinders were trying to fire. Turned out I had around 6 bad glow plugs. Found the problem with my AE right before I tore the top end apart.
This only occurred around 40F and below if I can remember correctly...
You should be able to seperate and test at the end of each glow plug harness, if you dont have access to a code reading device. Test from each pin of the harness to ground.
Your glow plug harness runs along the bottom of each valve cover. It is in black loom. The harness wraps around to the front on each side and snakes around the top of the valve covers and connects into the Main Harness. From there they go to the GPCM. I can snap a couple pics for you if you need me to.
