If your going to run the 38's then I would go with 4:56's. That will take you back to about a stock 3:50 performance wise. The 4:10's arn't enough IMHO.
I agree that 4.10's aren't enough for that set up, but I do think they'd make a pretty big difference over 3.55's. Personally, when I get in to the 37-40" tire range, I like bumping to a 4.88, but I also like maximizing power to the ground.
You would need a 4.30 gear to equal the 3.54. But of course you can't get that in these axles. I agree go with the 4.56s. You need to get the power to the ground with large tires.

When I had my first 78 F150 back in the early 80's it came with 3.50s. I put a set of 4.56's in it to turn my 38" mudders. I didn't do any mods to the 9" housing at all. I think the gear set was either Richmond or Zoom.
