Mercon or Mercon V?

Mercon or Mercon V?
I just changed the trans fluid in my 01 with the 4R70W, which according to the book, calls for Mercon V. For some reason I have a half case in my garage of Mercon, from when I first got the truck and did the change. I'm pretty sure thats what I used to do the change the first time, so thats what went back in there today. Question is, does the 4R70W really need the Mercon V?

...maybe I should re-phrase that...."Will any damage be done if I used Mercon" in it instead of Mercon V? If needed, can I just drain the pan and refill with the 5 or so quarts of Mercon V? Or does the fluid from the pan get pumped into the converter?

...Ok...Job done! Went out and got 14 qts of Mercon V and disconnected the line off the cooler and started the truck and let it pump the pan out, then let the cooler drain down. The (got very lucky!) took the rubber plug off and the converter drain plug was right there!! Complete fill is supposed to be 13.9qts, I think I dam near got that out! Filled her up with Mercon V....now I can sleep at night!!
