To start out with a little history. Last october i bought a 91 f250 7.3 4x4 with the e4od. The owner said he was pulling a trailer and the forward gears went out so they were selling it. The overdrive light was flashing, and the tach did not work. I found out that the tranny had been rebuilt in 2001.
I put a 95 f150 body on the frame, put in a 93 pcm. 92 wiring harness. I replaced the tach sensor. Rebuilt the tranny, replacing some of the hard parts and put in an f7 pump. I did put in a remaned solenoid block also. Fluid was not burnt, clutches were in descent shape. Finally get the truck plated and took it on its first drive today. When we left town it was speratic shifting, then seemed to even it self out and then shifted into over drive. Figured mabe it had some air in the system. Went about 10 miles get into the next town and stop at the first stop sign. Went to leave and the truck would shudder and the engine speed would rev up but no forward movement. Truck will go in reverse but no forward gears in any position. I even tried hitting the button for the overdrive with no change. I don't know if the over drive is flashing or not the bulb is burnt out. Did i break something in the tranny or could it be something with the valve body. It is doing the same thing that it did when i bought it.
Ok now i am stumped got the truck towed back to the house, put it in drive and it goes into gear. What the heck. I am going to drop the pan here after bit and see if i can see anything.
I don't think the filter will be your issue. If shifting it manualy did not do anything I would suspect an issue with the forward clutch. Possible for you to take line pressure readings? Possibly Mark K could chime in with his opinion.
All the air is purged out of the system in the first couple seconds that the engine is running. There is nowhere that air can get trapped and cause problems.
If it doesn't move in any forward position (and I see I missed that in the first post) there is something mechanical wrong. There is nothing electrical that can do this.
