Power steering cooler?

I am in the process of replacing the power steering pump, gearbox, and lines on the Bronco. I was thinking of plumbing in a small aftermarket trans cooler and mounting it up in front of the radiator. I would think with the added stress of the big tires it might help prolong the life of some of these components. Good or bad idea, any suggestions? Thanx in advance!

I had one and removed it because I didnt see much benefit.

Since you dont mention hydro assist and hopefully you already have a sag pump I dont see it really being necessary. It wouldnt hurt and adds a little extra fluid though.

I scrapped out a 78 Camper Special a few years back and it had a power steering cooler. I couldn't tell for sure if it was aftermarket or factory, seemed like a good idea to me. I am not running a Saginaw pump unfortunately, I have the older style Ford pump... it has the smaller fill tube with the round metal reservior. Up until recently it seemed to work fine even with 37s. I would like to go over to hydro assist in the future as the truck gets bigger, not until I have the D60/D70 combo ready to go in. I don't plan on doing the 1 ton swap anytime soon, mainly due to funds. I would have to believe that the power steering system builds a lot of heat, especially in an off road application with big tires and what not. Thanks for the input A/O, anyone else?

A cooler will prolong the life of the pump. I've seen some good ones in the pull a part on e series and even some with their own dedicated electric fan. I have full hydro on my truck and have cooked 1 pump so far because I ran a cooler that I had on hand. It was way too small. (I'm sure these guys will tell you just how inadequate I can be.) I electric fans to put on the radiator and the steering pump cooler sometime soon. If you're interested, it's rumored that Taurus electric fans work great for radiator cooling. Hope this helps.

I had a cooler on mine up tell a year ago when I blew it up. I haven't really noticed much of a difference.

i honestly don't see any point of a cooler on a wheeler, maybe with a fan, but even then not really. you aren't moving enough to actually get any real air flow to it in the sticks, and hot air forced through a hot cooler don't do much imho. maybe on a dual purpose rig that has big tires and sees a good amount of street time......

p.s. kirby is inadequate in :insert area of your choice:

Yeah that's true about not getting the air flow, especially in a wheeling truck. But having the extra volume of fluid and getting it out of a hot engine compartment I would have to believe it would help some. The gearboxes are pretty tough, my main concern is keeping the pump cool... I am looking to hopefully increase the life of the pump. Thanks guys.

Start looking for a Sag pump and brackets. The POS Ford pumps are crap.

If you knew anything you'd know that the Taurus fans are among the BEST electric fan available - either factory or aftermarket. The Lincoln Mk VIII fans are also very good.

Yeah I suppose you're right on that one. Of course finding a BBF in the boneyard is a challenge... finding one with Sag pump and brackets is near impossible. I know they are available through L&L and a couple other aftermarket companies, but you better have deep pockets. I totally agree, the Sag pumps are much better that the Ford pumps. I converted my 84 F150 over to one with junkyard parts, everything I needed came off an early 80s 6 cylinder powered Econoline van... it bolted right up and works great.
