Steering Fluid Cooler Purpose

I have a '97 F150 and I was wondering the purpose of having a cooler on the Power Steering. I also noticed that the Transmission fluid is routed through a cooler in front of the radiator and then through the cooler in the radiator (or vica-versa). Why is this, to keep the tranny cooler than normal, but not to cold that it won't perform correctly?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

the power steering cooler is necessary to keep the fluid from overheating. If ford didn't think it didn't need one, they wouldn't spend the extra money.

Most automatic transmissions route fluid through the radiator in a compartment called a "heat exchanger". This cools the oil somewhat, but it will still be apt too overheating.

An auxilary transmission cooler is a good idea, same deal with an inline filter.

Just keep the tranny fluid under 200F and you will be ok. Make sure you change the fluid every 15k-20k also with mercon V.
